Tears blur my vision as I run, hopefully, towards the hidout. I didn't know what to do! It's all my fault isn't it! This is the second time I haven't been quick enough to save somebody that I care about...Negative thoughts fill my head while running, but I try to shake them out. It's okay, I'm sure he would've told me to run anyways...right? I mean there isn't a cure and he was already bitten. Maybe I should've...killed him instead, you know to end his misery? No, no. Melody don't start this now...Come on, you did what was best. Now you're here, go inside and think of what to do next. What to do? What do I do next? I-I can't, not without L. Maybe I could stay here a little longer...Oh and have the memories of your friend that you let die? Nice motives. No. I can't stay here. I'll take as many supplies as possible. I begin to make a mental checklist of things I need: Canned food. Can Opener. Water. Dried Food. Matches. Batteries. Flashlight(s). Blanket and pillow. Duct tape. Knife. Gun and bullets. Bag to carry this stuff...and extra clothes. Seems like a good enough list to me. I start to wander around the hidout and check the things off my list. After I get all of the supplies, I put a sheathed knife in my shoe and put extra bullets in my pockets and more in the bag. I grab another knife and turn to say goodbye to the hidout before heading out. As I turn back towards the door, I notice L's cross necklace on the dark oak table by the door. I pick it up and put it around my neck. Now he can still be with me.
I head out of the house and back off into the wooded area by the road. This way I can still follow the road and not be too obvious. I start down the road and think aboutheading back into the city. That would be best wouldn't it....yeah it would. After convincing myself to head out of the neighborhood, I follow the route I took from the hospital and back track. About halfway there I feel a little safer and step out of the cover of the trees and onto the bloody, gut-covered road. Careful to avoid any remains of bodies, I cautiously head down the road towards the city.
As soon as I get to the city I hear a loud banging, that of trashcans I believe. I timidly turn the street corner and see people running. A man and a woman: The woman looks like she is in her mid-thirties and the man is maybe twenty years old. Then I focus on the noise. The man was crashing the trashcan lids together. Is he trying to attract the zo--biters? (A.N. The person who pre-read this chapter didn't understand why she said biters instead of zombies. It was her way of being closer to L, since he saidbiters and all...So if you didn't understand it this is my reasoning.) They both jump in a car and another man with a large bag runs up to the car and jumped in as well. Oh. They are collecting supplies. A herd of biters follows him and surround the car. The younger man starts up the car and without thinking, I run towards them and the woman spots me and points through the car window. The man sees me too, he points to an alley with a small gated area full of trashcans. I stare at them confused but I finally understand when the woman moves her arms like she was running and pointed there. Nodding my head I run and jump over the fence and they drive away quickly. I sit on one of the trashcans and wait for them to hopefully return.
