"Clara can you stop listening to that crappy music for 5 seconds and listen to me?", my overly annoying father yelled in my ear and I groaned and turned it off. "What do you want dad?", I asked and he smiled. "You have to take care of Jacob tonight. I'm visiting mom", he said and sat down on my bed. "whatever", I replied and rolled my eyes at him. "I put some money on the table for you, so you have to either order in or go out grocery shopping. But if you do you have to bring Jacob with you okay?". I nodded and he stood up, kissed the top of my head and walked out. Another night alone. Or... Another night alone with my 8-year-old brother, Jacob.

I heard the door close and I stood up pulling on a pair of ripped black skinny jeans, a white tank top and my black leather jacket, "JACOB!", I yelled and a little guy with messy brown hair and brown eyes came running into my room. "We're going grocery shopping", I said and he laughed and ran away. Probably to his room or something like that. I pulled on my black vans and pulled my brown hair back in a high ponytail and took on my Ray Ban glasses. "We're going, minion", I yelled and grabbed my phone and the money on the table putting them in my pocket.

"I can't tie my shoes Clara. Help!", Jacob whined and I sighed. He was sitting on the stairs trying to tie them but failed miserably ending up with just tying knots instead. "Here let me do it", I said softly and tied his converse shoes. "Come", I said and he stood up. "Can you hold my hand?", he asked as we stepped outside and I locked the door. "Why? You're 8", I asked and laughed. "but mom always held my hand when it was dark", he replied with a sad face and looked at the ground. I knew it was hard for him. I sighed and took a hold of his hand and his face lit up in a bright smile. "Now come on I'm hungry", I groaned and he nodded.

"Where did dad go?", Jacob asked and the smile on my face disappeared. "He's visiting mom at the hospital", I mumbled and after that we both went silent. We walked down the street that was now dark and I gripped on to Jacobs hand tighter.

We arrived at the supermarket 10 minutes later and I grabbed a basket. Jacob disappeared into the store as he was probably looking for all the sweets. I grabbed some ingredients to make a salad since I knew Jacob would probably persuade me to buy a lot of sugar like he always did.

"Did you see that kids face when we beat him up? It was hilarious", some guy behind me said as him and two other guys walked into the store. "I need beer", another said walking past me. I tried just to ignore them as I did with almost everybody. Just lowlife losers who think they're cool when they beat up kids and gets drunk every weekend. Well I don't think they're cool and I'm not scared of them. At all. They can go fuck themselves.

"CLARA", Jacob yelled making the 3 guys turn to me. "I'm here, minion!", I yelled back and he came running with way too much sugar than he could bare. "Do you want the whole store?", I asked laughing. "Can we pleeeeeeasse have this?", he begged and made puppy dog eyes. I knew I could never say no to him so I just nodded and he squealed and put the sweets in the basket. I then recognized two of the guys. They were the usual "Badasses", at my school. And now Jacob just yelled my name out loud. Great, just great...

"Hey there babe", one of the guys said. I remembered his name was Toby and he was the one always beating up kids smaller than him. That's why he always had bruises up his arms. I just ignored him for now. "Come on, Jacob. We need to go", I said taking Jacobs hand. "You're not going anywhere, princess", he laughed and grabbed my wrist pulling me away from Jacob. I turned around and yelped as his grip was tight on my wrist making it hurt. He was definitely drunk. "So, what is a pretty lady like you doing outside at this hour?", a third one said. I hadn't seen him before. He was not very tall. Taller than me though, since I was a dwarf - and he had curly brown hair and almost black eyes. He was wearing a Nirvana T-shirt, black skinny jeans and black dr. Martens. He had a tattoo on his wrist of what looked like song lyrics but I couldn't read them as I wasn't close enough. "None of your business", I said quietly and looked at the floor. "Are you a nerd since you're wearing glasses?", the guy next to the curly haired guy asked. I knew him. He was acting tough but he was actually really stupid. Like, Patrick-from-SpongeBob-stupid. I think his name was Zac. "No", I replied bluntly. The curly haired guy laughed. "Only nerds would say no to that", he said as he took a step closer. "Clara, I'm hungry. We need to go home", Jacob complained behind me. "Let me go", I said through gritted teeth. "You have a bad temper", Toby said and smirked. "I need to make dinner for the kid. Leave me alone". "Oh, and can't mummy do that for you?", The curly haired boy laughed taking another step so I could feel his breath on me. He smelled like beer. How dared he talking about my mom. He didn't know anything. "If you don't let go I swear to God...", I started. "You'll do what? Slap me? I'm stronger than you, nerd. I'm sure you slapping me will just turn me on", Toby laughed. "Just please let me go", I whispered. I looked at the curly haired boy and I could see the smirk on his face fade. "Let her go", he then said. "What? Dude, we were just having fun", the other one said. "I said... Let her go!", I could see him clenching his fists by his side. Why did he suddenly defend me? I looked at Jacob and he was crying silently. "Oh, look the little kid is crying", Zac laughed making Jacob cry even more. I lifted him up in my arms and didn't turn around to look at the curly haired guy. I hated them. My brother hardly ever cried. I paid for the food and gave Jacob a piece of chocolate so he would stop crying.
