Chapter 2....
Jocelyn watched his back turn. His hair flipped, as he laughed with the guy beside him. The lump was already steadily rising in her throat. Palms sweaty, she shifted her bag resting on her shoulder blades.
You need to move you loser. Her thoughts muttered to herself and ever slowly she felt her right foot take a tentative step. Eyes still glued to the blonde surfers head she felt the ever-present ache in her chest. Dragging her eyes away she tucked a piece of blonde hair behind one ear, glancing around. No one had seen her shameless ogling. That’s what it was after all.
You seriously need to get over him. Tell that to someone who cares, she snapped back at her own conscience. She did care though, more then she ever would. He was her first everything. Kiss, boyfriend, date. The first guy to have that perfect slow dance with, the one that would have her blushing like the love-struck teen she was whenever he reached for her hand. And of course the one she’d lost it too. That night at his place, in the summer with the heat surrounding them and the slight breeze blowing through the open window. Cheeks burning at her past memories she shook her head causing her hair to fall gently in front of her face. Blocking of peripheral vision, she started walking.
Of course they’d tried to be friends her maybe more so then him. She shuddered crossing her arms at the memory.
“We’ll work it out okay Jocelyn? I promise, I love you so much.” Then why are you breaking up with me? She thought as she fought against her instinctive power to ball her eyes out. Refusing to be one of those clingy girls who begged for guys to stay she nodded feeling her self try to smile. She could do this.
“I know Ad, don’t worry I’ll be fine.” She said letting out a shaky laugh hearing the falseness of it reverberate off her eardrums. Still he didn’t look convinced. She didn’t have time to beg though, to tell him how much she hated to love him at the exact moment he turned his back and walked away. That sloping kind of walk she had turned to love. Just like everything else about him. She couldn’t do anything though, just stand and let the tears finally fall as she watched the best thing that ever happened to her walk away.
“Jocelyn… JOCELYN!” Whipping her head around Jocelyn searched the crowds of students sauntering away from the school. She would recognize the voice of her best friend anywhere.
Sure enough Liana was walking towards her a huge pair of aviator glasses perched on her tan face. Long beach extensions added to her already long hair, resulting it to sway back and forth to her step. By the time she’d actually reached her Jocelyn had already counted five guys completely and utterly whipped.
“It’s embarrassing walking with you, honestly,” Jocelyn muttered as she heard a wolf whistle over her shoulder.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Except Liana’s smirk had already completely betrayed her. Guilty.
“Sure you don’t Li. And you wonder why I hate going to parties with you.” Letting out a long dramatic sigh Jocelyn watched as her friend pushed her hair out of her face.
“It’s not always my fault the guys are hooting, you’re a babe to darling.” At this Jocelyn snorted and rolled her eyes.
“Trust me. Absolutely.” Suddenly she was shoved roughly to the side causing her to laugh as her friend glared at her. Liana was constantly on to her about getting on with “the game” as she called it. Telling her that Adam was an absolute dick for dumping her and that she could do so much better. She was sweet really, always going on about how Jocelyn had the body of an angel. Yet Jocelyn refused to really believe it. Sure she was pretty but she wasn’t… gorgeous.
“Its not funny Joce, guys like you too.” Liana huffed, however Jocelyn only shrugged as she glanced to the right. It was that feeling again, the one that always ran through her at certain times. Pulling her own pair of sunglasses out of her bag she smoothly slid them onto her face. No matter how hard she tried the feeling always came back, and something in her gut knew she was right. Someone was watching her.
Seth’s POV
As usual she was walking towards him her best friend in tow, when she got the look. Seth watched from his hiding spot behind a tree as the blonde slipped on her sunglasses glancing around almost nervously.
Her hair had grown longer, he noticed, and the summer sun was finally taking advantage and tanning her pale skin.
Jocelyn- Rose Kage. There was nobody like her. The way she was so god damn beautiful and didn’t even realize it. How she was kind to everyone, how she didn’t have a care in the world.
“She can sense us watching her.” Sam muttered from beside him and Seth turned to watch her slump to the ground beside the tree, totally casual, and pull out her cell phone.
“You’re going to text someone?” Seth demanded. She sent him a look before glancing sarcastically back and forth.
“Do you see any danger here?”
“I told you, you didn’t have to come.” He snapped as he turned his attention back to the girls that were stopped in a driveway. Jet black hair sweeping briefly across his vision. There was a slight pause in the conversation as a raving motorcycle sliced by causing Jocelyn to jump. Automatically Seth cringed.
“I just wanted to see her,” Sam said quietly and Seth turned to face his best friend. Her hair was pulled on top of her head and she sat in a baggy tank and work out shorts. Totally innocent to any passer by, totally not in reality. “You’re not the only one who misses her you know.” Seth didn’t have anything to say to that, instead his gaze followed the girl he knew so well. He almost smiled when he watched her pull up her hair as soon as her friend had gone in side. Turns out she still hated it down. “Do you think you’ll ever talk to her again?” Sam’s question was so low and soft that Seth almost didn’t catch it. Years in the Agency had taught him well though, his ears could hear almost anything.
“No.” He didn’t mean for his words to sound as harsh as they did and he snapped his gaze away. Judging from Sam’s slight wince though they did. That’s how he was now, harsh, cold, and black hearted. He slept around with almost any girl he could find, and didn’t give a shit about who they were. Nobody in the agency ever talked to him about what had happened. No one ever talked about why he acted the way he did. He knew Sam had wanted to a few times but after he had yelled at her last year she had long since given up.
“We should get going,” Sam said standing up and stretching a couple stray pieces of grass falling from her calves. “They’re expecting us.” She stared him in the eyes for a couple seconds and he knew it was practically killing her to say something. Instead she turned on her heel and headed towards her black convertible. Seth followed after her forcing him self-not to glance back and check if the girl was okay. It didn’t matter now, it never would. Jocelyn-Rose didn’t even remember him.
