Chapter 4…

Seth POV

The door to the Agency slammed behind him with a bang, however Seth didn’t even bother looking around. Slowly the dim lights started to blink on as he made his way down the cold stone hallway. Positioned at the other end a set of large wooden doors, huge brass handles on them. All around him was the echoing of his own footsteps, and he tugged his leather jacket around him more to ward off the chill.

He’d been coming here since he was fifteen, after he got one to many arrests, he was given two options. Of course he chose the agency. There were only fifty of them around the whole world, twenty of them positioned around California. They called themselves “others”. Supernatueral would be too much of a stretch for what they were, and he wasn’t talking about vampires. “Others” were a special kind of human being, different genes ran through their bloodstream, allowing them to run faster, be stronger then the rest, have heightened senses. However you had to be trained if you wanted the extra speed, the extra abilities. If you weren’t you were just like any other human being. Seth kicked a stone causing it to skid across the rough floor. You were weak.

For as long as Seth could remember the agency had taught him everything. An organized group of assasins, spies. People that protected the world from the types of criminals that nobody else wanted to deal with, that nobody else knew about.

Reaching the door Seth grasped the rusting handle his grip tight as he knocked once, and only once. Shoving his hands into his pockets he waited. There was a catch though, like everything else he had come to realize over time. “Others” each had their other, forming a pair. Each pair had a special connection, something deep, a bond. Soulmates wouldn’t stand adequate to who they were, and besides, not all others married each other. There were exceptions, as long as each knew the rule. Everyone did, that is, know the rule. If one dies, then so will their other.

The door creaked open its hindges screaming as though in pain and a pale face stared back at Seth’s. She smiled, their familiar dark hair spilling over her exposed shoulders.

“Welcome home.”

“You did what?” Sam shrieked as she paced back and forth in front of Seth taking a brief moment to round on him. Seth sat silently playing with the coin he had earlier. “I mean God Seth could you be any more sloppy?! Watching her is fine, I mean that has to happen, I get it. But going to see her? Do you have any idea-”

“Jesus Sam cut the guy some slack!” Jay said his voice rising above hers. Sam’s mouth shut abruptly as she glared at him, however before she could speak he had already turned his attention. Staring at Seth he asked the question they had all been dying to know.

“How is she?” The room went dead as all eyes snapped to Seth. It was such a simple question, something so normal that is shouldn’t have meant anything. Yet it did, especially to them.

“She’s good.” Seth said with a shrug trying to act like he didn’t care. Sam snorted at this her eyes blazing. She had always been able to see him as though nothing but glass. Clear, and straight through.

“You go through all that trouble just to tell us she’s good?” She demanded and Seth was getting ready to yell back when a softer voice spoke up.

“Sam you need to relax,” Lauren said putting a hand on her twins shoulder. “I’m sure Seth had the whole thing under control,” she sent Seth a reassuring smile that he did not return. The room continued in silence after that, nobody seeming to know what to say. Taking a deep breath Seth stood up and started walking out of the room, catching Lauren’s worried glance as he passed. When he caught Landon’s sneer he glared back knowing the guy was just trying to get to him. Pushing past he rounded the corner and walked silently away.
