Chapter 3….
“Hey Adam, it’s been forever.” No.
“Adam! Hey how are you?” No.
“Right so I might be still really in love with you.” Definite NO.
Jocelyn let out a groan as she flopped onto her bed, away from her vanity mirror, and shut her eyes. Hopeless didn’t even begin to describe her situation. Any past fantasies why Adam would even in the slightest consider taking her back had been swept from her mind. Gone completely and forever. Just like him.
To say it killed her to see other girls with him was an understatement. Liana, bless her soul, had tried forcing her into numerous blind dates that ended up disaster. The one guy whom only talked in video game lingo. And then other who had tried shoving his tongue down her throat the second she got in the car. Lists went on and on, scattering Liana’s bedroom walls with names that Jocelyn had long since turned away.
Flipping onto her stomach Jocelyn pushed her self up and made her way downstairs to the living room. Plucking a thick book off the shelf she quickly whisked a breath over it before slumping down on the couch. Like always she flipped to the first page. She was younger then, maybe six, a could be seven year old, with two missing front teeth. Flipping through the next twenty or so pages of memories Jocelyn finally found the one she was looking for.
Staring down Jocelyn took in her sixteen year old self’s face. Poised and content she was staring off to something out of camera’s view. Her hair was natural and wavy running past her shoulders, giving it a messy look. A pair of large sunglasses perched on top of her head taming the bangs back, and showing off her eyes. A broken smile turned into a laugh took up her entire face, as her one hand clutched at her stomach. All alone on the wide space of green grass she looked like she could be the only one in the world. Yet for whatever reason you just knew she wasn’t. Knew that someone important was just off to the side probably laughing with her, and something one of them had said. Without the slightest of hesitations she knew it was Adam, she was certain. There had you see never been anyone but him. Never been anyone that made her smile like she did, or feel like she was beautiful in her dads old shirt and sweats. Though for some reason Jocelyn felt a nag in her stomach, something she couldn’t quite place. As if this girl’s smile was bigger, wider, her laugh louder, her someone closer to her then anyone ever had. Shaking her head Jocelyn cleared her thoughts, there was only Adam, only ever been Adam.
Carefully sliding her finger under the smooth layer of protective plastic Jocelyn pulled out the photo running her thumb slowly over it, before standing up, and pocketing it.
“I know that look.” Jocelyn jumped as the voice breathed down her neck and spun on her heel to glare at one of her best friends.
“Jesus Oliver,” she snapped as a couple of people bumped into her passing by. “Do you always have to sneak up on me like that?” Holding his hands up in surrender the brown haired boy just shrugged.
“It never used to bother you, in fact I’m sure you always knew I was there before I even said anything.” Running a hand through her hair Jocelyn rolled her eyes.
“That was two years ago,” she reminded him as he fell into step beside her, two heads taller he loomed over her like a giant slim bodyguard. Oliver had always been a runner. Pointedly ignoring her Oliver winked at a couple girls before looking back down at his short friend. Taking note of the slight bags under her eyes and the way it was as if she struggled to keep moving forward with the huge weight of a backpack holding her down. Without another word he took it from her and slung it over his own right shoulder.
