It was Saturday afternoon, and Jennie had decided to get a head start on her history assignment.
Not because she was particularly excited to spend her weekend writing about old wars and political treaties, but because Kai had asked if she wanted to go out later, and Nayeon had also mentioned something about meeting up with the others at Hong's Diner.
Jennie wasn't sure yet which one she would choose, but if she finished her work early, at least she would have the option.
That was enough motivation for her to sit at her desk, books spread neatly in front of her as she tried to focus on the paragraph she had been rewriting for the past ten minutes.
She had just started writing another sentence when her phone began ringing.
She glanced at it, expecting Nayeon or maybe Kai.
Instead, an unknown number flashed on the screen.
Jennie frowned.
For a few seconds, she only stared at it. She didn't usually answer unknown numbers, especially not when she was at home. But the ringing continued, persistent and annoying, and she was starting to lose focus on the paragraph she had been trying to finish.
With a sigh, she picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Hello, Jennie?"
It was a man's voice.
Jennie pulled the phone away from her ear for a second to check the number again, as if that would somehow explain why a random man was calling her.
"Uhm... yes? Who is this?"
"Oh, right. Sorry. It's me, Jin."
Jennie sat up straighter.
"Oh. Jin oppa," she said quickly. "I'm sorry, I didn't know it was you. What's up?"
"Yeah, sorry about that. I know it's kind of sudden. I actually got your number from Lisa."
Jennie leaned back in her chair, still confused.
"Okay?"
"Anyway," Jin continued, and this time his voice sounded more serious, "the reason I had to call is because Jisoo is in physical therapy right now, and unfortunately something really important came up at Uni that I can't say no to."
Jennie's fingers tightened around her pen.
Jisoo.
"I already called everyone else," Jin said. "Her friends, Soojoo, Lisa, the team. Irene is stuck with something for school, and Taeyeon is at work. Nobody can make it in time."
Jennie didn't say anything.
She already had a bad feeling about where this was going.
"So I had to call you as a last resort."
Last resort. Very flattering.
"Look," Jin said, sounding a little apologetic now, "I know you two aren't exactly friends."
Jennie almost laughed at that, that was one way to put it.
"But I had no one else to reach out to, and Jisoo needs someone to take her home after. Her leg gets weak after therapy, and sometimes the pain kicks in pretty badly after the session. She'll act like she can handle it, because of course she will, but she really shouldn't be left waiting there for hours."
Jennie looked down at her paper, the words on the page blurred slightly.
"So I was wondering if it would be okay with you if you could go there and take her home?"
