Jisoo woke to sunlight spilling through the curtains, her room still half-shadowed. For a few seconds, she didn't move.
Her knee felt stiff and her mouth was dry.
Her phone lay face down on the nightstand where she had left it the night before, as if turning it away could make everything less complicated.
It hadn't.
It was far too early to think about emotional damage.
She reached blindly for her phone and turned it over.
No new messages from Irene.
One from Lisa.
Actually, seven from Lisa.
Jisoo stared at the notification preview and immediately regretted being awake.
Lisa: Are you alive?
Lisa: If you died after getting cleared for surgery that would suck.
Lisa: Jisoo unnie wake up!
Lisa: I am planning something.
Lisa: Don't be scared.
Lisa: Actually be a little scared.
Lisa: It has something to with pizza.
Jisoo sighed and opened the thread.
Jisoo: Lisa, it's way too early for this.
Lisa: Unnie, it is noon.
Jisoo: It is? I thought it was still 6 in the morning.
Lisa: It's not! But anyway, since you got cleared for surgery, we are celebrating!
Jisoo: Lisa, I have not had surgery yet.
Lisa: You got cleared. That counts for something.
Jisoo: Not really.
Lisa: It counts as pizza and soda!
Jisoo: Everything counts as pizza to you.
Lisa: Correct. My house at six. Wear something comfortable and bring your terrible attitude.
Jisoo let out a small laugh despite herself.
Her thumb hovered over the keyboard.
She could say no, in fact she probably should. Irene was still barely speaking to her, and the house felt like a prison where everyone moved as if they were stepping on broken glass.
But Lisa's house sounded like relief. A place where she could breathe for at least one day, where she wouldn't be left alone with her thoughts.
Jisoo typed.
Jisoo: Fine. But if you make a speech, I'm leaving.
Lisa: I would never.
Jisoo: You absolutely would.
Lisa: Okay maybe one speech.
Jisoo: Lisa.
Lisa: Fine, no speech.
Lisa: Also Rosé is coming.
Jisoo: Obviously. You have had a girlfriend for five minutes and already cannot function without her.
Lisa: Correct. She is beautiful and requires snacks.
Jisoo: You are whipped.
Lisa: Thank you.
Jisoo smiled, then watched another bubble appear.
Lisa: I was thinking of inviting Jennie too.
Lisa: But only if you're okay with it.
Lisa: I may be annoying, but I have morals.
Jisoo stared at the screen. Her room was so quiet she could hear her own heartbeat.
From the back of her mind, Irene's voice lingered.
What if she hurts you again?
Jisoo swallowed, then lifted her eyes to Jennie's drawing, still propped against the lamp.
Nini and Gaji. Still best friends. Even when math is hard.
She drew in a long breath, steadied her hands, and began to type.
