Regret came crashing into him as soon as the door closed, knowing that he shouldn't have shut it. He should have explained to her that he did in fact love her with his entire being and he would do absolutely anything for her. That's why he was going to get on his knee in front of her tomorrow, to show his love for her but Luke believed that at this rate, he would have told Skylar before the time could even come.
That brought him back to why he closed the door in the first place; because he would end up telling her. Luke knew that he sucked at being a cute boyfriend when put under pressure, and the pressure that he's under now is crushing him so much that he can't even stop thinking and he won't even talk to Skylar.
And if they're okay by the time of tomorrow, then Luke's worries would leave him and him and Skylar could live happily ever after as a married couple. They'd get another cat so Pudge could have a friend and they could finally bring Kyle Mase into this world. Maybe he'd grow up to have Skylar's eyes but Luke's hair color, even though his and Skylar's are only a few shades different.
It didn't take long for Luke to feel a tear rolling down his cheek, making him feel like a weeny for crying so often, so it seems. He couldn't help it anymore. Skylar was seriously the one thing in life that he needed, besides his friends and family, of course. She changed Luke for the better and there was no way he could ever thank her enough.
Because of her, his life is so much better and because of her, he can finally say that he's happy. He used to believe that he was the luckiest guy; playing on stage almost every night, being able to choose a girl amongst the rest to take back to the hotel, and no matter how he treated them, it was okay because he was Luke Hemmings.
But he's learned better now. He's learned that what he used to do was awful and very disgusting. He's also learned that he wasn't as happy as he thought. He didn't understand how much better life is when you have someone to love or someone that is familiar to you being by your side all the time. He never really thought that slowing everything down and keeping one girl around would be the best thing to ever happen. A girl that he would start memorizing little details about her like what her favorite drink is, how many spoons of sugar she puts in her coffee, or perhaps the way she puffs out her cheeks when she's frustrated.
Luke didn't understand any of that but when Skylar came in his life five years ago, he started to see all of it. She finally opened his eyes to the right way of seeing life and he couldn't thank her enough for helping him. That's a huge reason why he wants to be with her for the rest of his life.
She makes him so happy and just the simple thought of her laughter can make him smile and start blushing because she is his. She is his girlfriend and they've been together for five years. Luke didn't want anything to ruin that and he wanted even more years than just five.
So, Luke stood up from the floor, wiped the tears from his cheeks, and prepared himself for the rant he was about to give Skylar. He was going to tell her everything besides the proposal and hopefully she would believe it because it was the truth.
Luke checked himself in the mirror, ignored his puffy red eyes, and then walked out of the bathroom where he saw Skylar sitting on the edge of the bed with her head in her hands. Just the sight alone made Luke's heart feel tight but it made him even more determined to make everything okay again.
He walked over and got on both knees in front of her, his height and the bed's height making them almost face to face. He stared at her and waited for her to look at him and when she didn't, he reached out a hand and laid it on her thigh, squeezing it gently to let her know that he was there.
"Skybaby, I'm so sorry - " he tried to start but Skylar's sad voice stopped him from doing so.
"Please just talk to me," she said, her hands still covering her face. Luke didn't like that her hands were the reason he couldn't look at her, so he reached up and wrapped his hands around her wrist, removing her hands from her face and intertwined their hands the best he could.
"First, I want to apologize for the way I've acted. I was just so stressed because of the trip and it wasn't just because it was going wrong, but because that was the place we fell in love, Sky. I wanted it to be as magical as it was five years ago. But of course, me freaking out the way I did and still am isn't helping anything. I guess.." Luke stopped talking for a second and let out a sigh before continuing. "I guess the reason is because we've gotten so serious over these five years and it's just now hitting me and I've done nothing but beat myself up about how much I mess up. I guess I'm just scared that you'll look at all the times I've done something wrong and decide to leave me because of them. I'm just really, truly, very, deeply sorry for it." Luke finally stopped his rant, proud of the way he was able to things okay again without spilling the beans.
But as Luke was celebrating inside about his nice words, the look on Skylar's face clicked to a different emotion and she started crying. Of all the things she could've done, she started crying.
"Skybaby, why are you crying?" Luke asked, concern wrapped around his voice and even causing it to break ever so slightly. He stood from the floor and sat next to her on the bed, hold her hand with one of his and wiping away her tears with the other.
"I just.." she stopped, letting out a sob before saying, "I was actually convinced that you were going to break up with me and this trip was some kind of closure but it doesn't make sense why I would think that."
Luke sighed in relief, glad that he didn't upset her with his words and said, "No, no, no, Skylar. There's no way in hell I'd break up with you." He pulled her into a hug as he said this and planted a kiss onto her cheek, nose, or forehead between each word, hoping that she would soon understand that she doesn't need to worry about that.
"Goodness, Skylar. Please don't ever think that. I love you so much that it hurts," he said, squeezing her tighter before pulling out of the hug so he could look at her. "What do you say we go visit the boys? I know they've been wanting to see you," he asked, not caring if the question was really random. He knew that they both needed to go out and see their friends and maybe get some laughs out of themselves to release some tension.
By the smile that spread across Skylar's face, he knew that she couldn't be happier to go. And with that, he stood up from the bed, grabbed her hand and lead them to the bathroom so they could get dressed for the friend adventure that Luke hoped would make everything okay.
