When Luke felt the soft matress smush underneath him, he had to force his eyes to stay open. He wanted to sleep - oh so bad - but he knew that if he slept then, considering that he didn't even have a good nights sleep before and he was tired at that second, he probably wouldn't wake up until it was time to leave California and go back to Australia.
He could have slept, not caring about the rest of the plans he had set for the town because they were deciding to not work out in the first place, but he couldn't sit back and not try. Sure he was upset, but he wanted to do this for Skylar.
Skylar was sitting on the bed next to Luke as he stuffed his head further into the pillow he seemed to be smothering himself with. She sighed after a minute - or many minutes - and said, "Lukebaby, please tell me what's wrong." Even though she knew exactly what was wrong with him, she felt the need to ask.
He let out a big breath and turned over on his back, resting his head on the pillow instead of his face. "It's this trip, Sky. Everything is stressing me out because nothing is working out."
"Why is it stressing you out so much?" Skylar asked, causing annoyance to sprout in Luke as he tried not to notice the feeling.
He couldn't tell her why he was so stressed and it bothered him. He couldn't tell her that this trip had to be perfect without having the biggest part reveiled. And Luke was stuck on the decision on keeping that a secret.
After what seemed like forever, Luke sighed and replied with, "Because, Skylar, this trip is important. This is the place we first met and we've always wanted to come back to it. Now that we are, everything has been fucking itself up." He stopped talking because he was afraid that he would start yelling if he didn't.
"It hasn't been that bad," Skylar tries, hoping that he would just open up to her because God knows how quickly he'll blow up if he keeps it all in.
"Really, Skylar? One, the hotel that we stayed in was quiet and it seemed like it was just me and you. Now, it's like every person in this state decided to stay here. I didn't sleep last night because the mom next door seemed to have starved her baby. Two, the park. I know the park wasn't that bad, but it was less beautiful and less us than the last time. Three, the arcade, which by the way was probably one of my favorite parts in our adventure, didn't go so well. You wanted to play that game and then Bill or Bob or whatever his name was died and it all upset you." Luke stopped talking then, afraid that he really would blow up and destroy everything.
Skylar felt even more guilty. She knew that she was a big reason for why some of these things didn't go so well, and it also bothered her how Luke didn't get Bob's name right. He was the best with memorizing names, and the fact that he didn't care to get Bob's name correct is a sign that he is actually very upset.
Skylar sucked in a breathe and then released it. "It's okat that it's not been working out, Luke. Nothing is perfect and at least it will be a story to tell." She knew that Luke was upset, so she was just going to accept it and let him keep it in, even if he blows up later on. She can deal with it because she deserves it.
Luke stayed quiet, his fear of freaking out on Skylar just because of a stupid trip was growing every minute and the fear made Luke want to sew his own mouth shut - as painful as that'd be, Luke would rather go through that than than the hurt of seeing Skylar upset because of his words.
Since Luke didn't answer, Skylar sighed and changed the subject. "What's next on the agenda?"
"We're going to that diner we once went to," he said, proud at how much he remembered. Of course he remember such an amazing 24 hours, he fell in love. Not only is it shocking that someone could fall in love whitin the time span of a day, but it was also shocking that Luke - of all people - fell in love.
"When do you want to go? We can wait if you want, you look tired."
Luke sighed and closed his eyes. He knew how tired he was; little sleep mixed in with many emotions were not the ideal combination on a vacation.
He wondered what time they should go to the diner and then pondered whether or not they should skip dinner, take a nap and then continue. After deciding against it, he told her that they'd go soon.
She sighed at his short responce and layed down next to him. The matress was soft and inviting, but she knew that if they slept, they wouldn't wake up until tomorrow. She can't lie and say that it didn't surprise her when Luke kept his hands to himself because it kind of did.
She expecting him to at least hold her hand or wrap his arms around her like he usually does. But he didn't. He continued to lay there, his hands resting at his sides and his eyes closed.
Skylar thought about letting him sleep for a little bit, but she didn't want to be a cause of another failed attempt at this trip.
"Hey, we should probably get going soon," she said, reaching out and touching him gentally because for some odd reason, she felt like he wouldn't like her touch.
When Luke sat up and when they were leaving the hotel room together, all Skylar could think about was how she felt like Luke wouldn't like her for much longer. She felt like Luke would stop liking her because he would convince himself that they weren't meant to be together anymore, and it scared Skylar to death.
When the couple reached the outdoors, Luke finally grabbed Skylar's hand, bringing her thoughts down a slight hum. Maybe she's just being stupid? Maybe this trip is making them think weirdly.
"Luke, please don't upset at this trip. I know we really wanted to visit this place, but at the end of the day, we'll still have each other," Skylar tried, not wanting to give up on making him feel better.
"This trip is important, Sky. I wanted everything to be the same and I wanted us to do the same things but.." Luke trailed off, shaking his head and looking at anything but Skylar.
"Luke, would you honestly take me to a date at the strip club now?"
"Propbably not," Luke said after letting out a small laugh.
"Exactly. We've changed and so has everything else. It's not new," Skylar said and smiled once she noticed that Luke was actually smiling at her for what felt like the first time since they had been in California.
"I love you," Luke whispered, looking down at the ground. Those words were true, he really did love her, so much that it hurt.
"And I love you," Skylar respnded, happy with how she's managed to make him a bit more happier.
And in that moment, Luke forgot about all his worries and all his struggling because he had Skylar and Skylar had him. That's all he wants is for her to be there with him. Forever.
