Skylar wanted out of there. Sure the arcade was fun - even though they've played only one game so far - but it's ruined two things for her. One, they replaced Pac-Man as if it was nothing special. As if the place was a guy who broke up with a girl and replaced her with a new one. The second reason is because Bob. He was the old man who was here the last time and even though they didn't know him, his death was still an awful thing.
"Skybaby, it's gonna be okay. Let's go play some games," Luke suggested, tightening his grip on her hand. She obeyed and followed him over to another racing game. He stopped and pulled her in for hug, resting his chin on top of her head.
He doesn't want her to be upset. He's still disappointed that this entire plan isn't going so well, and whenever he gains his hope back, something goes wrong. A mixture of him being upset at the plan and Skylar being upset about death is two things that he does not want.
Luke knows that death upsets Skylar, but he doesn't understand why the death of a stranger is upsetting her so much.
Skylar understands that Luke had this entire trip planned out, but she doesn't understand why a few flaws are upsetting him so much.
"Lets just play some games," Skylar said, knowing that they both had a lot on their mind and she hoped that being childish would pull the thoughts away for a while. She pulled out of the hug and smiled up at Luke, the wet trails of old tears still appearing there as if they were new.
"That's my girl," Luke said, sending butterflies into Skylar's stomach and manly moths into his own - since butterflies aren't as tough as manly moths.
As the night went on, Skylar gave hope that she'd stop thinking about death and not ruin this night for Luke; he's already stressed enough. But the more hope she gave, the more she lost. The hope for her to forget Bob's death for at least an hour isn't as easily done than thought. She tried to laugh along with Luke whenever he'd do something retarded on one of the colorful games, but she knew he saw right past it.
Luke did notice how little of fun Skylar was having. She seemed off and Luke was pretty sure he knew why. No matter how much or how loudly he laughed, she would always seem a little bit more miserable. No matter how much or how loudly she laughed too.
He didn't understand why she was letting the death of a stranger upset her so much. They probably said - at most - five words to man and she's acting as if she's been best friends with him.
Luke couldn't help but feel annoyed. He didn't want to be annoyed at Skylar and ruin this day, but the way she's acting was upseting him.
He tried his best to push his annoyance to the side as he pushed another token into the Ice Hockey mochine, smiling at Skylar as it started up. "You ready to go down again?" He asked, only to have her simply nod.
Luke pushed it off and slapped the hockey puck across the table, still trying to make this night not be a total disaster. But when Skylar didn't even try to protect her goal, letting Luke win, he sighed and sat his game piece down.
Luke sat there for a full minute before running his hand through his hair. "Skylar, seriously, what is wrong?"
Skylar only looked at him, panic coursing through her at the thought of him calling her 'Skylar.' He never called her that unless he was upset at her. She ended up starring at the hockey table, watching as the game pieces floated around the surface.
She did it, she managed to ruin the night for Luke. Of course she would ruin this. She ruins everything, so it seems. So the first thing she thinks to do is apologize. "I'm sorry."
"Why do you want to leave?" He asked, ignoring the fact that she's apologized because she had stopped apologizing for a while. She had stopped blaiming herself for every thing bad that had happened and Luke was wishing that she didn't get into that again. Sure, her mood made him kind of upset, but nothing else about this day so far is her fault.
"I just want to, okay? Please, Luke, can we just go?" Skylar asked, looking back up to Luke with nothing but hurt and anger in her eyes.
Luke couldn't help the other course of annoyance that floaded through him. He wanted to keep his mouth shut. He has never wanted to lock his mouth and throw away the key so badly before in his life but of course he couldn't. He just to say something, "Is it because of that stupid game?"
"No," she said simply, causing Luke to tighten his jaw at her short responce.
"Is it because of Bob? Skylar, he's a stranger. Why are you letting it upset you so much?" Luke almost yelled. Almost.
"It's not just that, Luke - " Skylar tried explaining, but Luke cut her off.
"Then what is it? Please tell me, Sky," he begged but when she didn't say anything, he added, "He's a stranger, Skylar. There is no need for a stanger's death to upset you this much, but if you want to leave so badly, then lets go."
"Yes, he was a stranger to us, but he wasn't a stranger to someone else. Someone out there loved that man and his death probably killed them inside. You didn't see me when my mother died. Luke, I was a mess. I know how it feels to loose someone you love. That's why I want to leave."
Luke stood at the opposite end of the hockey table, starring at Skylar who had a little bit more saddness in them than before. He hated himself. Here he was getting mad at her when he didn't realize that this place - Bob's death - was probably reminding her of her mother.
Luke didn't know what to say, he couldn't think of a good enough apology, so he simply grabbed the token bucket and walked over to a little boy who didn't have many tokens left in his.
The little boy didn't notice Luke approach, he was too into the game he was playing, so the older boy bent down and poured his entire bucket into the little boy's bucket, filling it up to almost half way.
Luke walked over to the token machine and placed his empty bucket with the rest of them. He turned to Skylar and nodded with his head to signal towards the door.
He walked out of the arcade with Skylar following behind him, the both of them still silent from their little argument.
He isn't mad at Skylar, just disappointed that the arcade wasn't an upgrade in the couple's night like he expected it to be and he's more mad at himself than he could ever be at Skylar.
To get the upsetting thoughts out of his mind, Luke thought about the smile that would spread on that little kid's face whenever he saw those tokens.
