They bolted towards the jeep, their breaths ragged as they sprinted across the open space. The vehicle seemed miles away, and the horde of zombies from the house next door had begun to notice them. The undead were closing in fast, a relentless mass of rotting flesh that blocked their path. There was no way they could fight them all off; their only chance was to reach the jeep before the swarm overwhelmed them.
Stacy's mind raced as she ran, frustration mounting. She cursed herself for not coming up with a better plan. The dire situation felt suffocating—every heartbeat seemed to echo the growing certainty that they might not make it out alive. Her legs burned, and her resolve was waning, but she pushed forward, desperate to save Matt and her dad.
As they reached the halfway point to the jeep, the first few zombies began to catch up. The group had managed to dodge most of them, but a pack of about fifteen was now blocking their way. The remaining zombies were just minutes behind, closing in fast.
Stacy assessed the dire situation with a steely gaze. With a machete in one hand and a long sword in the other, she charged at the nearest zombie. Her strikes were swift and precise—each swing aimed for the head, dispatching the undead with ruthless efficiency. The machete cleaved through skulls with practiced ease, and she barely paused to catch her breath.
Matt followed close behind, his hand ax swinging with force. He took out zombies with quick, powerful chops, his movements a blur of determination. Her dad, initially stunned by the chaos, found his focus and began picking off zombies from behind them with well-aimed shots. Each bullet found its mark, but his ammo was quickly dwindling.
"Stace, do you have more ammo?" Robert shouted, his voice strained with urgency. He took down another zombie with a precise headshot. "I'm running low. You guys need to move faster; I can’t hold them back forever!"
Stacy, without hesitation, reached into her back pocket and threw a magazine toward her dad. But as she turned back to continue the fight, a zombie lunged at her, knocking her off balance. She hit the ground hard, her head spinning. Dizziness threatened to pull her under, but she forced herself to stay conscious.
“Are you okay?” Matt’s voice cut through her haze. He was still battling a group of eight zombies alone. She struggled to her feet, her vision swimming. The zombie that had knocked her down was closing in again. Stacy barely had time to react, but she raised her machete just in time. With a swift motion, she severed the zombie's arm, the creature's momentum carrying it through her blade. Taking advantage of the opening, she brought her long sword down in a precise arc, severing its head from its shoulders.
Stacy and Matt were only five feet from the jeep now, the remaining zombies becoming more desperate as they approached. Robert continued to provide cover fire, picking off zombies from behind, but the pile of fallen bodies was making their progress slow. Each second felt like an eternity.
Finally, they reached the jeep. Matt leaped into the front seat, immediately beginning to start it up. Stacy slid behind the wheel, her hands trembling as she turned the key. Her dad scrambled into the back seat just as a zombie slammed into the door window, its snarling face pressed against the glass. The jeep roared to life, and Stacy slammed the gearshift into drive.
As the jeep lurched forward, Stacy’s heart pounded with a mix of relief and terror. The zombies surged toward them, but the vehicle's speed quickly put distance between them and the pursuing horde. Matt glanced back, his face pale but determined. “We did it,” he said, though his voice was barely audible over the roar of the engine.
Stacy nodded, her hands gripping the wheel tightly as she navigated their escape. “Let’s get out of here,” she replied, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. The immediate danger was past, but the sense of dread remained. They had survived this ordeal, but there was no guarantee that their next encounter would be any less brutal. For now, they were safe, and that was all that mattered.
