"Dad!" Stacy's voice cracked as she saw her father’s desperate struggle. A second zombie had latched onto his ankle, pulling him backward. Her dad clung to the ladder, but his grip was slipping. "I didn’t come all this way to lose you now! Hang on, Daddy!" Her words were choked with tears and panic.
She felt her control slipping, the fear overwhelming her. The one moment she needed to stay calm, and she was losing it. A loud shot jolted her back to focus. Matt was firing at the zombies behind her dad, each shot punctuating the chaos. The ringing in her ears was drowned out by the urgent thud of gunfire. Stacy pulled out her own weapon, aligning her aim to support Matt.
Suddenly, a loud crash signaled the arrival of another zombie, its groans echoing through the room as it lunged toward them. Matt swore as he turned, but the zombie was quicker, grabbing his arm and causing his shot to go astray. It was a fat, grotesque creature, and as it tackled him, he found himself pinned to the floor, its rotting face inches from his.
Matt wrestled with the creature, his fingers digging into its eyes in a desperate attempt to fend it off. The zombie’s relentless gnashing drew closer to his face. Panic clawed at him as he realized Stacy couldn’t risk coming to his aid without endangering her dad. He needed to hold on, just a bit longer, so they could save her father.
Minutes felt like hours, but finally, the zombie went limp. Stacy had driven a knife into its temple, the same move Matt had used to fend off his own attackers. "Now we’re even," she said, offering a hand to help him up. Though Matt was breathless and humiliated, he muttered a grateful thanks.
"Hi, I’m Matt," he introduced himself, extending a hand to Stacy’s dad. "Robert," he replied, shaking Matt’s hand firmly. "I’d hate to be rude, but we need to move—now!" Stacy’s urgency was palpable. Groans from downstairs indicated they were running out of time.
Stacy led the way down the stairs, each step calculated to minimize noise. The back door had been breached, and zombies were already searching the area. She ducked behind a wall, motioning for Matt and Robert to join her. Fortunately, the door’s view from the stairs was blocked, giving them a precious few moments.
Desperation fueled their search for an escape. Stacy spotted a side door across from the living room. "We’ll head for that door. The front door’s too risky. Follow my lead." She crouched low and crept towards the living room, where a bar separated them from the kitchen.
Grabbing a family portrait from the wall, Stacy hurled it toward the far end of the room. The zombies shuffled toward the noise, giving her a brief window of opportunity. She guided Matt and Robert stealthily to the bar, then towards the side door. With a final check to ensure they weren’t spotted, she opened the door just wide enough for them to slip through.
Inside, she flicked on the light, revealing a pristine garage. The automatic door would be noisy, but it was their only chance.
"Alright, we need to move quickly," Stacy instructed, her voice firm despite her fear. "Grab anything useful, but nothing too heavy—we’ll need to run. As soon as I open the door, we sprint to the jeep. The number of zombies has increased since we arrived, so don’t let anything slow us down. Got it?"
Both men nodded. Stacy handed her father a small handgun, then readied her own. "Ready?" she asked, her heart pounding. They positioned themselves by the garage door. As Stacy pressed the button, the door began to rumble open.
Zombies were already turning toward the noise, their grotesque forms charging at them. The gap in the door was widening, and the approaching horde was closing in. They had mere seconds to make their escape.
Stacy crouched and slipped through the opening. Matt and Robert followed, the garage door’s groaning filling the air. With the zombies gaining ground, they sprinted towards the jeep, their escape hanging by a thread.
