Stacy’s patience was wearing thin as she continued searching the store for her dad. The constant barrage of questions from Matt, with his insufferable arrogance, was testing her resolve. Jesse wasn’t much better; he was too preoccupied with shoving canned goods and fruit into his already stuffed backpack. Stacy wondered if he knew she had a well-stocked supply at home. She rolled her eyes and pressed on, staying vigilant and alert.
Without warning, a hulking zombie—easily eight feet tall and grotesquely swollen—rounded the corner. Stacy barely managed to dodge as it barreled into Jesse, knocking him to the floor. Reacting swiftly, Stacy and Matt charged at the beast. Stacy’s machete sliced through its head, while Matt heaved the creature off Jesse, the zombie’s blood splattering over Matt’s face and hair.
Jesse struggled to his feet, wiping blood and gore from his eyes. “Gross,” he muttered, his voice tinged with disgust.
“We need to move,” Stacy urged, glancing around the corner to ensure there were no more surprises. “It’s going to get dark soon, and I don’t want to be driving through a zombie-infested street at night.” Her heart raced with mounting frustration as she texted her mom, checking if her dad had called. With no response yet, she headed toward the electronics section, with Matt and Jesse trailing behind.
As they approached, Jesse’s eyes lit up at the sight of a display of tablet-laptops. “Dude, I’ve always wanted one of these!” he exclaimed, grabbing a box and eagerly unpacking it before stuffing it into his already overflowing bag.
“Really?” Matt asked, shaking his head.
“That’s not a bad idea,” Stacy said, her focus shifting to practical matters. “Matt, see if you can find radios or something we can use to communicate. It’ll help us spread out and cover more ground.”
Matt nodded and headed to the phone aisle, quickly locating a pack of six radios. He tested them to ensure they were pre-charged and distributed three of them, keeping the rest for himself. He handed one to Stacy and another to Jesse. After a quick test, they split up, each heading in a different direction.
“I don’t think this is a good idea,” Jesse said nervously, his breath quickening. “Maybe I should stick with one of you.”
“Come on, man,” Matt reassured him. “You fought well earlier. Besides, we’ve cleared out a lot of zombies. Just stay alert and quiet.”
“Okay, I can do this,” Jesse said, trying to muster confidence. “What’s the worst that could happen? A zombie jumps out and bites me? No, stay positive. Just stay alert and keep your ears open.” He continued talking to himself as he ventured down another aisle.
Stacy couldn’t help but smile at Jesse’s nervous chatter. She quickly composed herself when she noticed Matt waving her over from across the aisle. Her heart skipped a beat with hope as she rushed to where he stood, only to find something she hadn’t anticipated.
