The streets were eerily empty as they turned onto the main road. A small group of five or six staggering zombies spotted them and immediately began sprinting in their direction. Without hesitation, Stacy pressed a button located just below the radio, and the hidden knives around the Jeep sprang into action. She floored the gas pedal, driving straight toward the group. Her mom's eyes widened in terror, and she began to hyperventilate. As they neared the zombies, her mom squeezed her eyes shut, unable to watch.
Stacy, however, didn’t flinch. She plowed through the group, the blades slicing through the undead like they were nothing more than overripe fruit. Mr. Wilson was speechless, unable to process the brutality he had just witnessed. Stacy’s mom cautiously opened her eyes just as Stacy activated the windshield wipers, clearing away the blood and gore splattered across the glass.
“Please don’t puke in my car, Mom,” Stacy said, throwing a quick glance at her mom, who looked as though she might be sick.
Her mom, now a shade of green, simply nodded and covered her mouth, breathing heavily.
“Are you okay, Emma?” Mr. Wilson asked softly.
She nodded again, staring out the window in silence.
Stacy kept her eyes on the road, her mind racing. What if they didn’t find her dad? What if they did, but he wasn’t her dad anymore? She shook her head, pushing those thoughts aside. She needed to stay focused. She was determined to find her father alive, and she would do whatever it took to bring him back.
Of all the places, only her dad would think to go to BulkMart, the most crowded store in town, in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. The thought made her angry, but she couldn’t stay mad at him. His intentions were good, and she knew he was just trying to ensure they had what they needed. When she found him, she’d have to forgive him for being so reckless. But if they didn’t find him… No, she couldn’t think like that.
As they neared BulkMart, Stacy slowed the Jeep, scanning the chaotic parking lot. It was packed with cars—more than she had ever seen before. It seemed like half the town had the same idea as her father. Cars were parked haphazardly, some even blocking the entrance to the store. This was going to be much harder than she’d anticipated.
“Mom, take this,” Stacy said, pulling a knife from the glove compartment and handing it to her mom. “Stay here. I’m going in to find Dad. Mr. Wilson, you’re coming with me. I can’t risk you turning on my mom.” She looked at her mother with a serious expression. “Mom, if any of those things come out and try to attack you, run them over. If there are too many, drive away. Go to my house if you have to. I’ll find another way to get home. Keep your phone on, just in case.”
“I love you,” she whispered, hugging her mom tightly. Then, with a stern glance at Mr. Wilson, she quietly exited the car, handed him a smaller knife, and began walking toward the store, with him following closely behind. She was determined to find her dad, no matter what it took.
