Her mom came rushing down the stairs, a big suitcase in each hand, her purse slung over one shoulder, and a backpack weighing down the other. Whiskers, the family cat, trailed close behind, meowing anxiously. "I'm ready! But what about your dad? Shouldn't we wait for him?" she asked, her voice trembling with worry.
Stacy’s eyes darted to the window, a cold dread settling in her chest. “There’s no time, Mom. Look outside,” she whispered urgently.
Her mom’s eyes widened in horror as she reached the kitchen window. Outside, their neighbors had gathered in Mr. Wilson’s backyard, forming a twisted, macabre circle. Every one of them was drenched in blood, chunks of flesh missing, limbs hanging at odd angles. The sight was nauseating. They were clustered around something—or someone—on the ground. Stacy didn’t want to imagine what it was, but the piercing scream of a woman from within the huddle sent a chill down her spine.
Stacy quickly shut the shades and locked the back door, her hands shaking. “Please, take me with you,” Mr. Wilson begged, his voice cracking with fear. “They’ll devour me like they did her!”
Stacy hesitated, her heart pounding in her ears. The idea of bringing him along terrified her, but she couldn’t leave him to be torn apart. She wasn’t that heartless. “Fine! But if you show even the slightest sign of turning into one of those things, I swear I’ll chop your head off myself!” she warned, her voice fierce.
“Thank you,” he whispered, the relief in his voice palpable.
“Come on, we need to find Dad,” Stacy said, leading them through the house toward the front door. She paused at the entrance, putting a finger to her lips, signaling them to stay silent. Carefully, she peeked out the front door window. The street looked clear, but she wasn’t taking any chances.
Slowly, she opened the door, motioning for her mom and Mr. Wilson to follow. They crept toward her jeep, the silence heavy with tension. Just as they were about to reach the vehicle, a small figure came tearing across the street toward them. It was Janie, the little girl from across the street, but she was no longer the innocent child they once knew. Blood dripped from her mouth, and her face was a mess of torn flesh. A deep gash ran from her left eye down to her chin, with skin hanging grotesquely from her cheek. Her eyes, now a cloudy gray, were devoid of life, her pupils shrouded in a dead, eerie haze.
Stacy didn’t hesitate. With a swift motion, she swung her machete, the blade slicing cleanly into Janie’s forehead and driving straight through her brain. The top of her skull fell with a sickening thud to the pavement. Janie’s small body twitched and then collapsed in a heap, her final breath escaping her bloodied lips.
Stacy’s mom gasped, her face turning ashen as she spun around and vomited, emptying the contents of her stomach onto the driveway.
“Get in!” Stacy barked, wiping the blood from her machete onto Janie’s shirt before sliding it back into her belt. Her mom and Mr. Wilson scrambled into the jeep without a second thought, her mom taking the front seat while Mr. Wilson huddled in the back, his face pale and shaken.
Stacy jumped into the driver’s seat and started the engine, the jeep roaring to life. “Mom, do you remember where Dad said he was going?” she asked, her voice tense as she gripped the steering wheel.
“He mentioned getting supplies,” her mom said, her voice breaking with emotion. “But why would he just leave me behind?”
Stacy’s heart ached at the sight of her mom’s tear-streaked face, but there was no time for comfort. “I don’t know, Mom. Maybe he thought it was safer for you to stay here. We just have to find him. Let’s hope we’re not too late.”
She slammed her foot on the gas, the jeep lurching forward as she headed toward BulkMart. If her dad had gone to get supplies, that was the most likely place he’d be. The roads were empty, eerily silent, and as they sped toward the store, Stacy prayed they’d find him in time.
