Chapter 4
“Justin!” I screamed running to him. I dropped to my knees and he was out cold.
“Is he okay?” Asked a clearly not caring Scooter.
“Of course not stupid! Call someone!” I snapped and looking back down at my unconscious boyfriend lying beside me. I looked back at scooter to make sure he was doing what I said and he was just getting off the phone.
“They’ll be here as soon as possible.” I nodded. A few moments later we heard the loud screeches and hollers of the sirens. I saw them coming down the hallway looking clueless.
“Over Here!” I shouted waving my hand that wasn’t on Justin in the air. The Man on the crew was called Chris by the name tag on his left breast pocket.
“What was he doing when he fell?” Chris asked.
“Umm. Just walking up the stairs to go listen to the tracks he did yesterday. No today, earlier though?.”
“Has he been complaining of any pain in his head, eyes, or back?”
“Yeah... Yesterday? Why? What’s the matter with him!” I shouted starting to tear up.
“We dont exactly know right now. The hospital will figure it out. Are you the one riding with him?”
“Yes.” I said watching them load Justin onto the stretcher and taking him into the elevator. I followed going through the contacts on his phone to find someone to tell that should know. I reached the contact number for Patty and immediately hit call.
“HI Justin. What do you need?” She said obviously thinking it was him.
“ Um. This isn’t Justin. This is madeline. I just thought I should let you know Justin and I are on our way to the hospital.”
“What! What happened?”
“Earlier he was saying his back hurt and then we went to the studio to listen to tracks for always yours and he passed out. No one knows why yet but I thought I should let you know.”
“Thank you honey. I’ll be there when you get there I’m on my way now.”
“Alright bye.”
“Bye.” When I put the pone back in my pocket I felt the ambulance make a sharp right turn and then come to a stop. The door opened and doctors rushed out to start taking vitals. Justin opened his eyes and looked very confused.
“What happened?” I could hear my feeble friend whisper.
“ You blacked out going up to listen to the tracks.” I said grasping his hand.
“ Oh. Well I think you’ll be upset when you find out something...” He said looking into my eyes with guilt.
“Why? What’s the matter? You can tell me anything and you know that.”
“I know but there’s just somethings you have to find out on your own.”
“Alright.” I said with a sigh.
“Is my mom coming?” He asked.
“Yes she should be here any second. I love you. You’ll be okay. I promise.” I said as they swept him away through the large double doors to the emergency room. I was honestly worried about him. Why wouldn’t he tell me what was wrong? Was it bad? Could he die? I just didn’t understand. I felt a hand on my shoulder and turn my head quickly to find Pattie standing worried and almost in tears.
“You’ll tell me wont you?” I asked turning and putting my hands on her arms.
“Tell you what?”
“Why Justin has been complaining about his back and why he passed out? I’m worried about him. Why wouldn’t he tell me?” I asked crying.
“ I think i’ll let Justin tell you honey. You need to hear it from him.” She said embracing me in a hug. A doctor came out ad asked if we were the family of Justin.
“What’s the matter?” I said practically jumping into the doctors arms.
“We don’t exactly know what happened yet but Justin asked to see a Madeline. I’m guessing that’s you?” The doctor said looking at his clip board then lifting an eyebrow.
“Yes. Can I see him now?”
“Yep. Follow me.” I followed extremely close watching the doctor, to who's name I still don’t know, feet. We walked back through the shiny double doors where they had taken Justin. I looked up and saw him asleep with IV’s coming out of him at every angle.
“Just take a seat in that chair.” The doctor pointed to a chair in the corner of the room with the end of his pen.
“Oh and my name is Doctor Ryan Welks M.D. Nice to meet you.” He said putting out his hand. I shook it slightly not focusing on it but on Justin. I moved the chair right next to where my boyfriend lie.
“Justin I don’t know if you can hear me but I love you. You’ll be okay I promise.” The same exact words as before slipped through the gate that is my lips. I looked down at Justin’s cold purple fingers. I touched his hand to hold it and he turned to me.
“Madeline?”
“Yes I’m here. Do you remember what happened?”
“ Yeah. A little bit.” A doctor walked in through the door with a stack of papers.
“Mr. Justin. We got some test results back and your cancer is back.”
“I knew it.” Justin said tossing his head back on the pillow.
“Wait. What?” I asked, my jaw dropping nearly to the floor.
“Madeline. I didn’t want you to find out like this honey. I wanted to be able to tell you I had cancer not I have cancer.”
“Why didn’t you just tell me before?”
“Because I was afraid I would lose you because of it.”
“Well now i’m afraid i’ll lose you.” I said standing up and sitting on the bed next to him.
“Justin has stage 3 pancreatic cancer. He was first Diagnosed when he was eight.”
“Does that mean he’s going to...die?”
“No no no. We will put him through chemo therapy and see where it goes from there.” I sighed in relief.
“I’m sorry Madi. You don’t even know. I didnt’t want you to find out like this. I’m so sorry.” He said hugging me tight. I could see the tears rolling down his cheeks
