Sarahs POV
I took a deep breath.
"Are you nervous?" Trinity asked.
"A little." I laughed softly, knowing my nerves were pooling and churning inside my stomach. Gosh, I felt so sick. I wondered if she could tell. Trinity grabbed my hand and gave it a good squeeze.
"Everything will be just fine," she said calmly.
Her words helped, but in the back of my mind I had my doubts. "What if it doesn't go well?" I whispered.
"Then I'll be here to comfort you, and stand up for you." She lifted my hand to her mouth and kissed it softly.
"I'll also be there," Marcus chimed in. "I'm not sure if I can compete with Trinity on the comforting part though."
I laughed softly. "Thanks guys." I exhaled. "Now let's get out of the car before my family thinks this is a robbery." Now that my nerves had calmed down I was finally able to just make a joke.
I got out of the car and my lips immediately curled into a smile. My family was out in the yard, playing music. Some were laughing and drinking, others trying to see who I was with.
I closed my door and headed to the gate, Trinity and Marcus trailing behind me. I walked over to my mom, who had arrived a little while earlier. I gave her a hug.
"Mom, you remember Trinity and Marcus, right?" I asked, letting her go. My aunts started to come over, giving me hugs and asking how I was doing since I'd left for college. Then I introduced my people.
Trinity wasn't timid — she was laid back and relaxed, keeping a polite smile and staying only a foot or two away from me at all times.
Marcus on the other hand was energetic and ready to party. He made sure to greet everyone like they were his own family.
Then we went inside, where most of my older cousins were. I hugged them one by one, the smile on my face bigger than ever.
Being around my close family definitely calmed my nerves, even if they were almost in their mid-twenties and I was only nineteen.
"Who are your friends?" Dee asked.
This was the perfect time to say something — to say who Trinity was to me. "This is Trinity and Marcus," I said. Unfortunately, I was a coward. So I didn't tell her. I kept up my stupid facade.
I glanced over at Trinity, who kept up that perfect smile. I was starting to feel guilty.
After a bunch of introductions I could finally sit down and settle in. I took a seat on my aunt's couch — the smaller one that only fit two people.
Trinity sat next to me and Marcus continued to stand and talk with my family.
"Sorry," I mumbled to Trinity. She gave me a sweet smile, though I could see a bit of disappointment in her eyes.
"It's fine," she said.
Gosh, I wanted to hug her. Kiss her.
"How do you three know each other?" My cousin's boyfriend, John, asked.
I took a breath before answering. "Uh, we all go to FAMU," I said. "I met Trinity first and Marcus is her cousin."
"How's FAMU anyway?" another asked.
"I mean, I love it. I have so much fun and my classes are great." I looked over at Trinity. "What do you think?" I asked. I just wanted her to get involved and unwind. Trinity smiled at me like she appreciated the gesture.
