'What do you think you're doing here?'
I snapped out of my reverie immediately and turned my unflinching gaze to the petite woman who had addressed me.
'Just...paying my last respects.' I forced the words out of my mouth, my vision slowly blurring with tears. I blinked them away quickly. 'My condolences to you, M'am.'
'I don't think so,' she hissed in a dangerously low voice, her eyes flashing with dark rage. 'You get the hell out of here before I sic Elliot on you.'
'M'am, I don't mean any harm.' I held up my hands instinctively, trying to keep my tone calm.
'You've done enough. I see through your act. You sure as hell better keep yourself locked up in your room before you go round killing more of your friends, bitch.' she spat venomously, her hands clenched into pale fists.
Oh God, she thinks I'm responsible for him... and the two of them as well. But there was nothing I could say. I couldn't deny that perhaps I could've done something to save Josh, & if I'd maybe stopped them from going ahead with the prank...
'I'm really sorry. ' I said genuinely, my throat all chocked up with emotions. I got up quickly and walked off briskly, but not before turning around for a second glance at Josh's headstone.
I hope your spirit is well.
Even though I knew in my heart he was still being tortured.
'Hey, Sam!'
I quickly wiped the tears off my face even though my eyes and nose were probably hella red. 'Hey you two.' I muster a weak smile at Chris & Ashley.
'You OK?' He asked in a concerned tone. Obviously nobody was, but it was a rhetoric and I was probably handling it better than his grieving parents. Especially his mom.
'Yeah.' I glanced at Ashley who had a solemn, downcast expression on her face, a stark contrast to her usually cheery countenance. 'I don't think you guys should go there. His mom didn't exactly welcome me with open arms.'
Chris nodded sympathetically. '3 kids in 2 years... I can't imagine.'
'Yo bitches.'
The lilting tone of that familiar voice made me wince. 'Hi Em.'
'Umm, I didn't mean it in an offensive way,' Emily widened her doe-like eyes.
'I know. it's just, that's kinda what she called me.' I glanced at Mrs Washington, her fragile frame shaking violently as she sobbed. 'I guess I deserved it.'
'Hang on, Sam. You pretty much saved all of us from getting ripped apart by...them, and you weren't exactly thrilled with what we did last year. If you weren't with us, he wouldn't be the only one. She doesn't know shit 'cos she wasn't there to witness everything.' Emily said fiercely. I bit back a rueful smile. Sure she was fiesty and sometimes got on the wrong foot with people, but she could be a really loyal friend.
'We really couldn't have prevented anything. ' Chris injected firmly.
We stood silently for a minute in our spot respectfully, trying to let our pain dissolve with the gradually melting snow.
