I cursed under my breath as Emily's face turned pale.
'Ha ha ha, Sam. You can come out now.' Emily rolled her eyes.
'Em, I don't think she's here.' I clenched my jaw.
'What the hell? She can't just disappear. ' Emily furrowed her brow. 'Let's keep a look out for her on the way back to Josh. As much as she can be a pushover at times, that girl's got some brains of her own. She can't have gone too far without a good reason.' Em headed out. I followed behind. Once she got an idea into her pretty little head, you couldn't do nothing to get it out. This was just one of the things I like about her.
Pushing the thought to the back of my mind, I felt my senses switch up to high alert. Every room we passed through safely made me feel just a little bit more relieved.
'I swear when I find her though...' Emily's fingers curled around the tiny bottle tightly. I rubbed her shoulder gently and the tension in her neck released a little as she strode steadily into the room Josh was in.
'Josh, we found-' I began to say excitedly. The rest of my sentence died on my lips as I witnessed a pale Samantha trying to wring her hand free from Josh's tight grip.
'Hey!' I picked up a stray piece of stone and tossed it at him. He growled, yellow eyes flashing as he let go of her arm.
'Thank you.' Sam's hand felt cold as I helped her up.
'Josh, we found it.' Em held up the bottle of antidote. 'You can be you again.'
Beside me, Sam's withdrawn expression slowly morphed into one of surprise, then delight. 'Ohmygod. He's really going to be cured...' A slow grin took over her face as Emily handed her the vial. 'Josh... you're going to be alright.'
Josh started to thrash about wildly, the chains clanking together unpleasantly. He was disoriented but I could hear what he was saying.'No....not for me...' he growled in a voice that was otherworldly.
'What?' Sam stepped back, a pained look on her face. 'Please stay still okay? It'll be over soon.'
Josh's sharp gaze shifted to fix on mine suddenly. 'Don't... don't you dare.' he spat.
'What?' I felt a thin sheen of sweat forming on my forehead.
'Give it... to her.' he continued to say. 'Now...'
'Huh?' Sam was unusually impatient. 'Josh, you'll be fine, just stay still okay!'
'Guys...' I took a deep breath. I could still feel Josh's piercing gaze on me. 'He doesn't want it.'
'Don't freaking screw us around Matt.' Sam growled fiercely. 'I think he wants you to give him the antidote that's all.' she looked slightly hurt.
I exchanged a quick look with Emily.
'Sam... he doesn't want it because he wants to save Hannah.' Emily being Emily finally said.
'Not a chance. ' Sam the spitfire exclaimed. 'Josh... Hannah can't even be saved anymore.'
'We don't know that for sure.' I said calmly.
Sam glared at me. 'We came this far to save Josh. The last time I checked he was one of your best friends.'
'Sam... that's what Josh really wants.' I said softly, looking at Josh in the eye. His head jerked forwards, his version of a vehement nod. 'Can we honour his wish?'
'Josh...' Sam's face crumpled up. 'I know, we all love Han too... but this is too huge a sacrifice... I don't think I can do this.'
Josh growled something incoherent. I stepped closer cautiously, my ears peeled.
'Please... for me...' his breath was hot and raggedy. 'Thank... you...'
I held his frail arm and squeezed it gently. 'What are buddies for.'
'So what, are we just going to kill him?' Sam's tone was resigned.
'No we're not.' Em spoke up. I swear I saw a tear glistening at the corner of her eye. 'We're going to find Han and try to give this to her. If it doesn't work...I promise we'll get back here.'
I turned my back as Sam and Josh shared lingering looks and exchange last words.
Josh might not be himself anymore, but he was still alive in that wrecked vessel of a soul.
A/n: Hey! The Sam part disappearing and then being found by Josh is anti-climatic I know but I don't want to drag this on any further and make it a boring ol sequel. Leave any suggestions you have in the comments! Thanks for reading xx
