'Helloo, Em?' A nudge jerked me abruptly out of my train of thoughts.

'Oh! My bad. I'll take an iced coffee, extra sugar.' I recovered in what I hoped was a graceful attempt, smiling cordially at the barista.

'Extra sugar?' Matt teased.

'Give me a goddamn break.' I snapped tersely, tapping my fingers on the counter. I didn't even have to look to know he was hurt. Guy's as sensitive as a puppy. It was endearing for the most part but sometimes I wished he would man up a little & take control of his own emotions.

We took our coffees to our usual table at a comfortable corner.

'Yknow I didn't mean that.' I sighed.
'You always don't.' he answered. I couldn't tell if he was being serious.

'I'm sorry. I'm trying to keep my temper in check. It's just not very easy.' I admitted, sipping my drink. I had grown to be more accommodating ever since it all happened. But really, I couldn't help it sometimes. I wonder what goes on in the minds of people sometimes. They can be really dense at times.

Matt grinned. 'I kinda dig it though. But yeah, some change will be good.'
'Very funny.' I rolled my eyes, my heart warming all the same as I heard his words. We acted like we couldn't stand each other sometimes in front of people, but I care deeply about him as he does for me. Although I don't tend let it show. But in this world, once you make your feelings known, you'll be pretty damn vulnerable. And that's not what I want to be.

'Something's on your mind.' Matt raised an eyebrow.

'You don't know that.' I raised my own perfectly trimmed brow back, trying to act casual.

'You can't hide from me Em.'

'If I tell you, you promise not to breathe a word to anyone.'

'I don't like where this is going.'

'Too late.' I said quickly. I was actually dying to tell someone about my idea. My crazy, completely impossible to accomplish idea. But I really hoped Matt would be on board with this one. 'So after what happened. The police went to check out the mines.' I started to say.

'Yeah.' Matt looked at me suspiciously.

'They got some stuff from the Sanitarium & found some dead Wendigo bodies. Only because it was after dawn. So they are under the impression that it's not dangerous anymore even though they had to shut it down permanently after what happened.'

'Em...'

'But two of them didn't make it out alive. They were said to have been trapped under some collapsed structure even though their bodies weren't found. You know what that means.'

'Yeah. Just what are you getting at?'

'Josh is still alive. And I'm going back.' I declared.

'What the hell, Em? He isn't Josh our friend, or even Josh the Psycho anymore. He's a freaking...'

'Yes, he's a Wendigo now.' I said calmly. I don't get why everyone hesitates to say it like it's a taboo word. As if one would appear on cue. 'But it's not too late.'

'What do you plan to do?' Matt furrowed his brows. 'Jesus, Em, this isn't the only way to find closure.'

'I'm not looking for goddamn closure. I've moved on, accepted the reality of this situation. But I won't sleep well at night knowing that he's still out there, living & breathing, but with an insatiable hunger so animalistic and brutal... I need to put him out of this misery.'

'I think that's really kind of you to think of it this way.' Matt said slowly. 'But is it really worth it? He's not going to be the only one you're facing.'

'If you're so scared, you don't have to come.' I said. 'And no, I'm not going to guilt-trip you or beg you to come along. This is really totally up to you. But no matter what, I am going.' I fold my arms and lean back on my chair.
