'Josh... it's me. Sam. Your best friend.' I blabbered almost uncontrollably. 'Don't you remember?'
'Sa-sam...' the creature in front of me dragged out the single syllable of my name. No, not creature. He's still Josh.
I watched painfully as Josh continued to moan and grumble as he struggled to break out of his chains. My finger reached out tentatively, but he twisted his head to the side as if he didn't want me to.
'Sam... get...away from me. Please,' he gasped, his eyes flying wide open. I could see desperation and worry swimming in those baby blues which were slowly clouding over.
'You bet I'm not going to. I'm going to get you out of this mess. I have an idea.' I said firmly, trying to convince myself and appease Josh. 'Just hang in there okay?'
'Sam.' His eyes cleared and for a moment he was simply Josh Washington, the guy I knew back from grade school and the one whom I would always crack lame jokes with all the time because nobody else loved corny jokes like we did. 'Please do this for me too and stay away.'
I caught a glimmer of something in his eyes before he let the Wendigo spirit in him take over. It was almost imperceptible, but it was there alright.
Hope.

1 hour until dusk
'hey darlin don't despair cos it's not like we're in the middle of nowhere!' I sang, trying to be off-key on purpose. Felt weird since I did YouTube covers as a hobby and I actually have a decent amount of subscribers.
'Woah what the heck Mike?' Jessica leapt at least three feet into the air. 'You didn't have to scare me like that. Fyi, your rhyming sucks.'
'I'm sorry for trying to break the awkward, tense silence.' I said playfully. 'Let's just wait here.'
'And what if they don't come?' Jessica clenched her teeth and shivered. 'I shouldn't have trusted you. Now we're actually in the middle of nowhere, I think.'
'Not really, ' I squinted. 'I swear I saw smoke coming from there.'
'So what, we're just going to go there and hope it's not a demented psycho?'
'Jess, I am just going to take that chance. You can stay here if you want and I'll yell for help.' I said warily. Not that I was regretting anything - I still loved Jessica- but I missed Emily's decisiveness and quick thinking sometimes.
We trekked for another maybe 10 or 15 minutes before reaching a small clearing. Nested between and behind some pine trees, was a wooden cabin. The smoke which was dense and pouring out from the chimney was now just faint wisps. Someone was definitely inside. I went up to the door and knocked.
'Hello? Anybody home?' I called.
Silence.
'Hello?' I yelled louder. 'Anybody I'm there?' I was so tempted to just try the knob and go right in. I turned back to ask for Jessica's opinion. 'Hey, do you think-'
My blood ran cold when I spotted her glove on the ground, with no trace of her anywhere else.
