As much as I wanted to leave so that the chances of me getting mauled by a Wendigo would be less significant, I knew in my heart what I was getting into when I swore to let Josh rest in peace. It didn't really make sense to chicken out now even though my mind was screaming at me to just kill him off mercifully, to put him out of his soul sucking misery. Looking at Sam's hopeful expression and teary eyes only served to assuage my guilt.

So far we only had to fend off three or four sneaky ones which dropped from the ceiling or leapt out from dark corners. I have never been so grateful for Matt who bravely took the lead. I knew he was just as scared as I was, but he squared his shoulders anyway and yelled for both of us to step back when he thought he could handle it by himself. I have to give credit to Sam too who didn't seem to be fearful at all. I have to admit: I couldn't say for sure if I would have gotten this far if I'd gone alone. It was merely pride and me being driven by impulse and emotion which led me to voice out my suggestion.
Of course, I wouldn't admit that to anyone.

I knew we had hit the jackpot when we stepped into the next room. It was a typical science lab, only the liquids in the test tubes and beakers were in varying shades and colours, unlike the colourless weak acids and alkalis we worked with in chemistry.

And that there was a long table right up front, a decomposed body strapped to it. I gagged, not wanting to look closer.

I beelined towards some cabinets at the side of the lab, while Sam took her position up front on the desk and Matt walked around, looking closely for any loose papers.
I coughed as the cabinets opened and a cloud of dust flew up to my face. Stacks of blank paper greeted me and I realised that whatever records that were in there were rejected and disproved theories/hypotheses.

'Dammit.' I sighed heavily when I saw a safe tucked at the back of the cabinet. 'Guys, any pass code ideas?'

'Can't we just break it?' Matt furrowed his brow as he came up behind.

'Sure genius, if you have a hammer with a diamond tip.' I was so frustrated I didn't realise I had made a bitchy remark.

I looked at Sam imploringly, begging for her to say something more intelligent. She raised an eyebrow, her eyes going all shifty as she glanced to her left. I frowned, feeling perplexed, and then I realized her gaze was on the chemicals. I raised an eyebrow incredulously but slowly made my way over.

'Wha-wow, that's pretty genius Em.' Matt said, his voice chock full of genuine awe. 'I bet some really strong HCL will do the trick- or whatever you have there.'

'Well it's a stretch since this thing is hard as concrete...but I appreciate that.' I winked. Matt grew slightly red. I liked how he was still mildly awkward and shy whenever I showed him some TLC in public. I turned around to give Sam a grateful smile, but her back was already turned and she was sorting through more papers.

I owe her one.

I grabbed a pair of goggles and a handful of disposable gloves from a box on a table, feeling a sense of deja vu as I pulled them on. I felt like a science student again, only this time it was literally a matter of life or death. I uncapped the bottle of unlabelled chemical and tipped it over the box. A sizzling hiss was emitted, and I saw a corner of the safe melting into a dark grey viscous liquid.

'I need more.' I exclaimed.

I poured another bottle of liquid-- this time it was a pale pink diluted ough syrup colour-- and the most odious smell ever entered my nose. I puffed out my checks and held my nose, my eyes squeezed shut. Rule number one: never inhale anything you're not sure of.

'Way to go! ' Matt smiled happily as he took in the sight of the half-melted metallic safe.

'Damn.' I gingerly picked up a bottle smaller than the size of my palm with my triple (probably more) gloved fingers. 'Please don't tell me we did this just for a bottle of eyedrops. ' it looked exactly like the brand I used to have before switching to another which didn't make my eyes tear every other minute.

'Well well, what'd you know?' Matt grinned as he tentatively perused the remaining un-corroded sheets of paper beside the bottle. 'I think we found our antidote.'

'Well then let's get going before someone dies,' I said in a light-hearted manner which still turned out wrong. 'OK, you know what I mean. Sam-' I spun around.

She was nowhere to be seen.

A/n: Hellooo thanks for the patient wait! I'll be going on a hiatus until 25/11 which is the last date of my exams! (ughhh). I might post a bit once every few weeks until then. I'm not going to force myself to update a lot because I know the quality of the story will suck and I hate that. So please continue to follow this story and I hope you did enjoy this one x
