Two hours until dusk
'I think we went the wrong way.' I swung my torch down in front of our path for the millionth time. 'See?'
'Uh, what?'
'Exactly. No prints.' I raised an eyebrow at Ashley. 'Hey, you ok?' she seemed pretty distracted but I didn't point it out until now. I get worried easily so I tend to read too much into things.
'Yeah.' she looked startled, as if she'd just realised I was addressing her.
'Let's go back.' I reached for her hand and held it, hoping she would take it as a sign that she could tell me anything at all, no matter how bad she thought it was.
'Chris?' her bottom lip was wobbling like mad.
'Yeah?' I braced myself.
'I... I want to go see Hannah.'
'Ash. Hey, Ash.' I looked into her beautiful eyes, glistening with tears. But beautiful all the same. 'I know what Emily seems to be doing is fine. And maybe it is. Maybe Josh hasen't turned.' I said softly. 'But Hannah... Mike was there when it happened.' My mouth was set in a grim line now. 'She's not who she was anymore, baby girl. '
'I don't get it, " she burst out. 'Why her? Why him? Why everyone? I mean, can't the native American spirits see that what they did was the last resort? It's not like they were feasting on humans for fun! They're not sadists, yknow! ' she yelled.
'We can't break the curse, but at least... tell me at least we can do something for her. Maybe help her find peace like what Em is doing for Josh.' she broke down, tears streaming down her cheeks.
'I think there's only one way, Ash.' I sighed.
'I know. It's cruel but...'
'What she is right now, it's no way to live.' I said firmly. 'Do you think Hannah... would want that?'
A faint smile flittered over her pained expression. 'She would have told me to hold a pretty funeral for her, with Whitney Houston playing in the background and only daisy petals on the coffin...' she gulped, trying to stop her sobbing.
'Chris... would you really do this?'
'I can't say no.' I said grimly. 'Let's go, Ash.'
'We should leave a note for the others.'
'Oh yes.' I took a small flag out of my bag. It was really just a thin piece of cloth and a stick fashioned together. We all had at least five on hand in case we got lost and needed to leave a trail.
'I think that's good.' Ashley nodded. 'Let's go.'
A/N: gonna drag the suspense out a bit longer. Sam will be up in the next chp! Also, I won't be updating daily anymore cos I'll be busier with school and exams. I will do a weekly update most likely. Thanks for understanding (:
