The hair at the back of my neck stood up as a brief but piercing scream penetrated my eardrums. 'Did you guys hear that?' I asked Em & Matt with wide eyes.
'That sounded a lot like...'
'...Mike.' Matt completed Emily's sentence in an incredulous tone.
'What's a grown man like him screaming about? Wait, don't tell me...' Emily had the meanest scowl on her face.
It took me a few seconds to register what she was thinking. 'Christ, Em, of course not.' I grimaced. I knew Emily did have genuine feelings for Matt, but she still had not completely gotten over the fact that Jessica had snapped him up pretty darn quickly after their breakup and how Jessica always took any chance she could to rub it in her face. 'Not in this forsaken place. Actually, I think he's in trouble.' I said, worried.
Matt found himself taking the lead and scrambling towards the source of the disturbing sound, thoughts of one of his best friends in danger amping up his heart rate.
'Jesus.' Behind him, Emily's jaw dropped as he stumbled into a room.
'Brilliant, we have guests.' A man with graying hair and a receding hairline exclaimed brightly as if he were having a tea party. The door behind us clicked shut, a simple move which had potentially sealed our fate.
'What the hell's going on?' Matt's jaw tightened visibly.
'Just having a little chat with some of your dear friends. Unfortunately, they aren't being very cooperative.' he sighed, like it was a great pity that the struggling Mike would not stop trying to escape & talk to him like he was doing him a favour. Across him was Jessica, her head drooping down like a wilted flower. 'I didn't want to do this... but it seems like you kids don't know when to stop.' His disturbingly cheerful tone morphed into a low growl.
'The cops are on their way, you piece of shit.' Emily spat, her face coloring with anger. 'We don't even know you. What do you wish to achieve by doing this?'
'I'm just doing what karma has failed to done for me. I'm not surprised... the wicked always have a way of evading their just deserts. But I guess you can say the world was just telling me to wait... and I shall be rewarded. I must say, I'm just a bit disappointed at how easy things are going for me now.' he said airily.
'Listen, we're just a couple of kids, like you said. We haven't done anything to you, not that we remotely know of, so please just let us go & maybe we'll help you find the people you're really searching for.' I tried to keep my wavering voice steady.
'Always the nice one, eh, Samantha?' My blood chilled when he said my name like it was a joke. 'You were Josh's favourite, yknow. Ah fine, I almost feel sorry for you. Maybe you really had no idea and was just adversely influenced by your group of pathetic friends.' he paused. 'I'll tell you why you're here. Just one question- do you know why Josh did what he did?'
'You mean the prank? He said it was just something to get back at us for...for indirectly causing Hannah and Beth to die.' My voice trailed off.
'And that was supposed to be the end.' The mysterious man stared right at me with an icy expression. 'He didn't ask to be ostracized, to be hated on afterwards. But that was what all of you did. Did you have any idea it drove him to sink into a deeper depression? Did you even have any idea he had depression?' His voice was wholly ominous with dangerous undertones.
My heart clenched painfully as Josh's pitiful face flashed in my mind. A prisoner of his own mind. And I... supposedly his closest friend, as he had confided in me some weeks before we went on the trip... the thought that he was battling his mental demons didn't even strike me once. The secretiveness that surrounded him like an invisible, impermeable layer of fog was just dismissed by everyone as him slowly coming to terms with his sisters' deaths... definitely not the opposite.
'Reality check, what does this have to do with you?' Emily narrowed her eyes.
'Josh was my patient. And, well, my only friend.' The man's eyes became vacant. 'We could relate to each other so well. Nobody, not the world, could understand us at all. He told me about what happened, and I about my childhood. We agreed that humans are really such disgusting creatures. And we vowed to be each other's safe haven, each other's confidante. When he disappeared, I thought he had walked out on me at first. Then I remembered why he was even my patient in the first place.' His eyes turned cold & unfeeling again. 'You're all just like them. Consider this a form of justice, even if it's twenty, thirty years down the road.'
This time, it was Em's shriek which filled my ears as the man brandished a knife out of nowhere and brought it down onto Mike's shoulder.
A/n: I'm sorry for not posting this long! Partly because my wattpad app was kinda screwed up (I use my phone to write), and partly because it seems most people have lost interest so far. Not that I blame you, it is getting pretty darn long but I'm wrapping it all up soon. Thanks for reading this, as always xx
