Ok, so I freaked out and texted Chris. But I had to let someone know. There was no point in trying to convince or argue- Emily was as stubborn as the proverbial mule.

What I least expected was Chris' reply.

Can I come?

My jaw dropped so low that I had trouble unclenching it so it returned to its normal position.

'Did Jessica send you a nude? Omg! ' Emily snatched my phone impulsively.

'No-' I tried to wrestle it out of her hands. So much for being a football player. Emily was way more nimble and had already seen the text.

I braced myself for the yelling and mentally apologised to my ears.

'Ohmygod, ' she started to say. I opened my mouth to explain, but stopped when I saw the devilish smile stretched across her face. 'Looks like I won't be needing you, Matt.'

'Em, he's just playing around, ' I quickly said.

'Oh that did not sound like a joke to me. How 'bout I ask him myself?' Em whipped out her phone from thin air and started typing at a million words per second.

'Em, don't be ridiculous.' I winced as soon as the words left my mouth.

'Chris doesn't think I am.' Her phone buzzed. 'See? At least it won't be a one-woman mission.'

'Whatever alright, I'm going with you.' I threw up my arms in frustration.

'Naw Matty Moo, just stay at home and be in your lil comfort zone.' she said sarcastically.

'Jesus Em, what kind of boyfriend am I if I were to let you go off with him?' I sighed.

'You're cute when you're jealous. ' Emily grinned slyly. 'Ah, ok. The more the merrier I guess. Yknow what, I'm just gonna go ahead and text the others.'

'There's no stopping you now.' I muttered under my breath. Em's eagle ears picked up what I said, but she just gave me a sweet smile and continued typing.

'Camping?' My mom frowned. 'Where are you going? What is it for? Are you sure-'

I licked my lips hesitantly. 'Yes mama, it's completely safe. And it's just going to be a few of us and a teacher near school. Really. I can give you his number if you want.' I said, knowing she wouldn't ask.

'I'm just so scared for you, Matthew. After everything that happened.' My mom sighed, looking more vulnerable than ever.

'Ma, I'm here aren't I.' I stepped forward and gave her an awkward side-hug. 'I won't go anywhere without telling you.'

'You'll always be mi amor.' She traced a thin finger down my cheek, instantly making my guilt shoot through the roof.

'I'll be safe. I promise.' I said firmly.

Saturday morning, Emily asked me to meet at her place. She didn't disclose anything else, just a come over to my place (: . I wondered what that odd looking smile meant- she usually used ;) or nothing at all when she was serious or pissed off.

'Hey Matty Moo, don't open your eyes cuz I got  a surprise for you.' A pair of woollen gloves clapped over my eyes and I reeled back in surprise.

'You know Em, if you want the D, you can just ask.' I teased.

'Don't be disgusting, I just ate. Just walk straight ahead.'

I followed her instructions and when we stepped inside, she finally lifted her hands from my face and I gasped as I took the sight in front of me.

Sam, Jessica, Mike, Chris, Ashley.

They were all here.

'Surprise.' Emily smirked.

'Guys...' I lifted an eyebrow.

'FYI, before you ask, no I didn't force them to join because Emily isn't the control freak or manipulative bitch she always seems to be.' she said playfully. I swear I saw Jessica flinch though.

'Enough with the small talk though. Whoever isn't ready can continue to stay here. The rest of us, let's get going.' Emily picked up her duffel bag, surprising me immensely as I'd expected her to ditch it in my care.

I let her take the lead and the others to walk in front of me.

'Hey man.' Chris stopped in front of me. 'I meant what I said yknow.'

'I know. I just can't believe it, that's all.' I admitted. 'I mean, literally, after everything...'

'I guess it's unfair Josh has to suffer like that while we can just get on with our lives.' Samantha piped up, then quickly looked away. I knew that she had a soft spot for Josh but it was hard to tell if it was a crush or just a platonic friendship they shared.

'It is the least we can do.' I nodded as we continued our slow trek up the hilly slope.

Onto Blackwood Mountain.
