As Mike went round the cabin trying to find a way to open the door, I decided to have some fun with him. I slunk away quietly to the front, dropping my left glove onto the ground strategically before tiptoeing away to hide behind a tree. Barely holding back my grin, I watched as the blood drained out of his panic-striken face, his eyes darting around rapidly as he tried to spot for signs of me.

'What are you doing here?'

My throat dried up because I didn't recognise the voice at all. It was a man's, deep and unforgiving. My smile slipped off my face and I held up my hands instinctively.

'I...we got lost, my boyfriend and I.' I stuttered. 'I was just trying to pull a prank on him-'

'Well both of you don't belong here.' I turned around slowly to face him. His face wasn't unkind, but it was marred by wrinkles, marks left by decades of worries. 'I can show you the way back onto the path, but please do not wander off in the future.'

'Mr-Sir, I understand where you're coming from, but we're trying to find our friends.' I bit my lip. 'We got separated. It's no biggie, we've all been here...before.'

Something in my expression must have tipped him off, because no way would he have recognised me otherwise since our pictures were not permitted to be printed in the papers. He gave a curt nod as understanding dawned on him. 'You're one of them. You should know better than anyone to wander off like that.' He stepped closer and I took a step back instinctively. 'What are you even doing up here again?'

'I...I don't really know.' I mumbled. 'I mean, we just decided we wanted to really end it all...for them. But I don't know...I don't know if this is what we should be doing, or if anything good will come out of this.' I blurted out, my feelings coming out in a rush of words. 'Please, I didn't mean to-'

'Get the fuck away from her, asshole! ' a voice yelled behind me. I saw the cartridge of the gun in my peripheral vision and I hit it out of Mike's hand impulsively, wincing as my own hand throbbed with the impact. 'The hell, Jessica? What's going on? Who the fuck are you?' he said in a loud, overbearing voice, getting more agitated with every word. I knew he was just being protective, but I felt mildly peeved.

'We just ran into each other, that's all.' The man said calmly, as if Mike was happily welcoming him into his own house. 'Maybe your girlfriend should be the one telling you what's up.'

'He didn't do anything to me, Mike. I uh, was just trying to find my glove.' I said lamely. He would be so infuriated if he knew I was just trying to pull a prank on him.

Mike narrowed his eyes. 'Right. You still haven't told us who you are.' he didn't lower the gun, it was still trained on the man's forehead.

'I live here, for goodness' sake.' He sighed. 'I didn't expect two teenagers trespassing and holding me at gun point for being in my own territory. And my name's Dr Hill.' he said matter-of-factly. 'And you kids are...?'

'I'm Jessica, he's Mike.' I answered, still not sure of what to make of him. 'Um...'

'You kids look like you need some hot chocolate in your system. Come in to my humble dwelling,' Dr Hill turned and walked off without waiting for an answer. I shrugged wordlessly at Mike's raised eyebrow and suspicious look and followed him. I mean, if he's a doctor, he has got to be a good guy right...?

I picked up my glove and slipped it onto my hand. It felt ice cold thanks to the water which had seeped through while on the ground.

Dr Hill's cabin was dimly lit by the dying fire in the fireplace. A few framed pictures hung on the walls, including one of a lone house in the countryside and a scarecrow in the foreground. I felt uneasy looking at the picture.

'Jessica, I'm not sure this is a good idea.' Mike hissed. 'Especially after what went down-who would want to live here?'

'I think you're forgetting about flamethrower guy.' I raised an eyebrow, referring to the man who had unfortunately been attacked while running away with Chris. 'Call it a woman's instinct, but I have a feeling he might be able to help us.'

'I have a feeling too, and it's nothing good.' Mike's jaw clenched.

'We're getting out of here as soon as we smell that something fishy's definitely going on, alright?' I promised, my eyes landing on a glass casing display of a myriad of masks. Temporarily drawn to them, I started to walk over to scrutinise them closely, especially the sprakly golden one meant for masquerade balls in Victorian times. A thought weaved into my mind, and I felt almost ashamed for thinking about the homecoming dance that was coming up under such circumstances.

A lone piece was lying on the floor underneath the display, seemingly forgotten. I picked it up absent-mindely and felt the blood drain from my face as I took in the dark eyes and the sly, conniving lipsticked grin.

A sickening wave of disgust washed over me.

He knew what Josh was up to. And he probably helped or even instigated him to pull the cruel prank on us...

'I see you've found one of my best masterpieces.' His voice came up from behind me as the mask slipped from my fingers.
