8 hours until dusk
'I doubt we can even go into the mines.' Jessica whispered in my ear as we set up the tents.
'I think Em will find a way.' I replied warily, 'and we already got this far. Doesn't make sense to turn back now.'
'I'm sorry.' Jessica looked up at me, a sympathetic look flashing in her eyes. I knew she was talking about Josh.
I gave her a thin smile. 'I'm okay.' I don't know how many people can tell ... that I had a crush on Josh. He was a nice, funny guy. Always making people feel welcome. I've never really seen the dark side of him though. But dark side or not, it hurt to lose a best friend. What if I had confessed to him earlier? Would it have given him a reason to see the good in us and not turn to revenge? My heart ached a little mulling over this, but what was done was done and the best thing to do was really... just try to find him again.
'Damn, I forgot how cold it is up here.' Ashley winced, wrapping her arms around her body.
'OK, I'm gonna go get some firewood.' Chris volunteered, making sure that he had a flamethrower on hand.
'I'm coming with ya.' Matt picked up his own backpack.
'Be careful.' Emily's eyes were filled with worry and concern, the first sign of affection she had ever shown to Matt in front of the friends. I couldn't hide my smile and Em caught it, but she pretended not to see it.
'Ok, we need to discuss this. We can't just go right in without a plan.' I spoke up.
'I thought that was pretty much the plan.' Emily raised an eyebrow.
'Since we have seven people, we should split up into groups of 3 and 4, with at least one guy in each group.' I rationalise.
'So that'll be me, Mike and you and the second group can be the rest.' Jessica quickly said, avoiding Emily's amused glance.
'Sure. Remember never to split up into pairs or individually under any circumstances. Even if something happens... stick together and follow one another.' I said, trying not to think of a Wendigo chasing on our tail.
'But what if one group finds him?' Mike asked.
'You'll probably be able to find us.' I said grimly. 'Anyway, splitting up is just for the sake of efficiency. But we will be moving from one place to another as a big group, so not to worry.' I looked at everyone. 'Got your weapons?'
All of them nodded hesitantly.
'Ok, I guess we can tell the rest when they get back.' I retied my hair into a neater bun as they resumed unpacking their things. I opened the flap of my tent and crawled in, taking out my Moleskine notebook from my backpack and a pen.
Day 1
We've arrived at an optimal camping spot. I think right now we are just trying to wrap our heads around what we have to do in a few hours' time. I don't know what I'll do if -when- I see Josh. What can I say if he's now turned into one of them? None of us really said what would happen, but I knew that he would just be killed mercifully. It'll hurt so terribly, but I am powerless to do anything else.
Although... perhaps what is reported has some truth to it. What if the doctor who was working on a cure for them was on his way to a breakthrough when he died? Maybe if I could get my hands on the reports... there might still be a chance, no matter how small it may be.
I won't mention it just yet to them though. Wait til we find him so that my effort will not go down the drain.
