Artemis had always loved hunting demons. Not for the pleasure of killing but for the pleasure of making sure mundanes were safe. She learned to fight from the early age of five. She learned how to throw knives and use a bow at seven. And when she was nine, she got her own electrum snake whip, just like her best friend and parabati, Isabelle Lightwood.
The Nightshade's and the Lightwood's have always been close but when Artemis was ten, she watched her family, her mother and father die, protecting her from a Greater Demon. From that day she swore to protect those from demons and anything supernatural.
The Lightwood's were happy to take Artemis in to their home and teach her the ways of a Shadowhunter, and they did. They taught her how to use her whip to the greatest potential, most of all they taught her how to use it properly. But what they could never teach her.. Is how to fully love again.
Of course she loved the Lightwood's, but
When she watched her family die.. She felt the love from her heart disappear, and darkness fill that part of her heart. No she didn't turn evil. She just became sad, and broken.Artemis and the Lightwood's were currently living in the New York institute and they had a very powerful shadowhunter in their presence. "What are you still doing here? I thought you were going to hang out with Simon tonight?" Artemis was never rude, well only when she needed to be, but Clary was always here. Yeah she lived with Luke Graymark and her mother Jocelyn Fray (well now Graymark.), but now that clary and Jace started dating she was here for more than just training. To be honest, it was getting kind of annoying.
"Jace asked me to stay." Clary replies with a shy smile. "You two are crazy for each other." Artemis says with a laugh. Clary blushed and rolled her eyes. But before she could comment back Jace, Isabelle, Alec, and Maryse came into the library.
"Maryse? What are you doing back?!" Artemis went to hug her. She loved Maryse like a mother. And after seven years of not having a mother around, she was. Maryse had went to Idris-the home land of the Nephilim or Shadowhunters-and wasn't to return until a couple of weeks later.
"Well, I just wanted to see everyone and I have some news! We are moving to Beacon Hills, California. There is some demon activity there and some downworlders as well. I've talked to a friend of mine he's Druid. He told me there was an institution on the outskirts of town." Maryse explained. Whenever there was demon activity, they moved. The longest they've ever stayed in one place was London for five years.
"So get packing!" "Wait what about, Clary?" Jace asked. "She may come as well. If it is okay with Jocelyn." Maryse tells them and of course they smile at each other and Clary immediately calls her mother. Artemis didn't really like moving. She liked staying in one place and explore the area for awhile, and she did get to do a lot of exploring here in New York but she wasn't done exploring. "When are we leaving?" Artemis asks while crossing her arms. "Tomorrow morning. We're going to take a plane." Yay, Artemis thought to her self.
While the others seem to be fine with taking a plane, Artemis was not. She despised planes. They scared her. You could either land safely or you could crash on the runway. The first time she ever flew on a plane was when they were moving to London. They had been in Oregon at the time and they thought they needed a change, since what had happened there.
At first she thought that flying on a plane would be easy. But that changed once they were in the air. Artemis' anxiety rose as the plane flew higher. That's when she discovered her fear of planes. "Artemis, are you thinking about planes again?" Isabelle always seemed to know everything Artemis was thinking. And she was never wrong. "Yeah.." "It'll be okay." Isabelle reassured her parabati. Parabati in Shadowhunter language meant, "Best Friend/Partner. And the two were best friends. Artemis nodded and they went to their rooms to pack for Beacon Hills.

The next morning everyone woke up early so they could get to the airport on time. They got their bags and headed for the car. Once they got to the airport and went through security, Artemis sat down and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. "So what kind of demons do you think are in Beacon Hills?" Alec asked his mother. "I'm not sure. But I do know that there are some werewolves and such." Maryse answers the question on everyone's mind.
"Flight 72 to Beacon Hills, California is now boarding. Flight 72 to Beacon Hills, California now boarding."
The Shadowhunter's board the plane and Artemis can feel her anxiety start up. "It'll be okay, Artemis." Isabelle sits by the anxious girl and rubs her shoulder. Artemis nods and closes her eyes. 'Please be over quick.' She thought to her self.
Many hours and three airports later, the fourth plane they've been on since the last rest stop lands in Beacon Hills. "Thank you for flying Delta, and have a wonderful stay in Beacon Hills." The captain says over the intercom on the plane. Maybe Beacon Hills won't be so bad. It wasn't to small and wasn't to big. It was just how Artemis liked it.
They got off the plane and got to luggage claim and got their bags and rented some cars and drove to the institution. When they got to the institution it had looked like no one had ever even stepped a foot into this place. Yes it was beautiful but it had dust flying in the air and when they went inside brown and burgundy paint peeled off the walls. "Okay guys get unpacked and go to sleep you all start school tomorrow. Public. High school."
School. Artemis hated school the only thing she liked about it was reading. The least thing she liked was math. She was never good at math, but she got somewhat better over the years. "But Maryse? Why not just home school us like you've always done?" Artemis asks in a soft voice. "Because. You all need some normal friends. Pulse, if we're going to be here for a while we'll need to act normal. That's why I'm taking a shift at the Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital." "But mother. They're mundanes!" Isabelle whines. Isabelle was always mature but when it came to humans...she wasn't very fond of them.
"Isabelle. You will do as I say. Understood?" Isabelle nodded and went upstairs. "I got all your school supplies and such. I'll have them out organized in your bags by the door for tomorrow. Well... Get to your rooms!" They children flee to their rooms and pick out the clothes they will wear on the first day of public school. Artemis was nervous. She was scared to go to public school. She had many questions on her mind. 'Will they think I'm strange when I wear my whip on my arm?' 'Will they think I'm strange because of my runes?' 'Will they even like me?'
But who wouldn't like Artemis Nightshade? She was profoundly beautiful. But all she saw was flaws. All she saw was a broken, ugly, full-of-flaws girl. But in reality everyone thought she was perfect. A queen even. People even told her that. But all she thought was, 'I'm the queen of brokenness.'
I hope you guys liked the prologue! I will sometimes write in third person and also in Artemis' perspective! And if you read the Authors note I do not curse so I will not be cursing! I will also update next week! But if you could...
