SMUT WARNING! YEAAAH

Potential triggers: bit of unwanted flirting, work place relationship

---

The following two days passed in a blur of documents, unanswered questions and increasingly inconvenient thoughts about Jean Durand.

Saturday's briefing had taken place in his office.
It had begun at seven in the evening and lasted until nearly ten, though only the first hour had concerned Geneva.

The rest had been devoted to testing you.

He changed appointments without warning and expected you to notice. He handed you an outdated schedule, watched you find the inconsistencies and offered neither praise nor apology when you realized they had been planted deliberately.
At one point, he stood behind your chair while you corrected the guest list, close enough that his breath brushed your temple.

"Stop doing that."

You froze with your pen above the page.
"Doing what?"

"Biting your lip."

You released it immediately, suddenly conscious that you had been worrying the tender skin between your teeth.
"Sorry, I didn't realize I was."

"I did."
His voice came from far too close behind you.

You tried to return your attention to the document, but the upcoming appointments had become considerably more difficult to read.

"Is it distracting?"
You asked before you could stop yourself.

That earned you a small glare but no actual answer. Jean reached past you and tapped a line on the page instead.

"You have miswritten the protocol designation for the Italian delegation. That is not their current classification. Their status was changed last month."

You blinked, quickly scanning the document. He was right.

You corrected it, your cheeks turning scarlet as you did.
Jean remained behind you for another moment, unmoving.

On Sunday, the work phone had rung four times.

The first call concerned a meeting time.
The second concerned a missing page from a briefing document.
The third was to inform you that the dinner in Geneva would begin thirty minutes earlier.
The fourth served no obvious purpose at all.

Jean asked whether you had packed.

You told him yes.

He then asked what you intended to wear to dinner.

When you reminded him that he had instructed you to choose something understated, there had been a pause on the line.
"Did you?"

"Yes."

"Good."

You expected the line to go dead.
Instead, silence stretched between you.

"Was that all?"
You sighed.

"No."

You waited, but he offered nothing further.
"What else did you want to know?"

"Don't wear black."

Your gaze moved to the black dress that has already been folded inside your suitcase.
"Is that an instruction?"

"A preference."

"And if I wear black anyway?"

Another pause.
"Then I will know you did it to provoke me."

The line went dead before you could answer.
You stood beside your open suitcase for several minutes afterward, staring at the black dress folded inside and wondering what precisely he had imagined when he asked.
