Chapter 4: Abel

I guess fate brought us in the same room together.

“Great! She said, sitting in the chair next to me.

I wanted to know everything about her. What part of Britain she came from. Her age. Damn, I didn’t even know her name. Whilst in thought, I realised the room had gone silent. I didn’t want her to think that I was neglecting her.

“So, what brings you here?” I asked, breaking the awkward silence.

“Well, I’ve always wanted to be a backup singer, so I guess I’m yours now”, she said, smiling to herself.

I remember putting up the advertisement for three new female backup singers. They were supposed to call Lamar and Lamar was to tell me if he had found the three girls. How could Lamar forget to tell me, especially if they were as fine as this one?

“Cool.” I said returning the smile “You don’t sound like you’re from around here, but I can’t really pinpoint your accent…”

I lied. I knew this girl was from Britain somewhere.

“I’m from Manchester actually, which is in England” I thought so. “But my mum is Brazilian and my dad is Portuguese so…yeah”

A foreign girl. Good, good.

“I’m Ethiopian, by the way” I said, hoping she would be impressed.

Maddie

“I know.” I said

MADDIE! WHY DID I SAY THAT? HE’D ONLY THINK I’M A STALKER!

“You do? How?” he questioned, with slight confusion on his face

“I’m like, your biggest fan! I’ve downloaded all of your mix tapes, so...” I blurted out.

WHY DID I NOT LEARN FROM THE FIRST TIME?!

“Seriously?” he asked, a smile forming on his face, “What’s your favourite song of mine?”

“Probably ‘The Morning’” I said, returning the smile

After that, our conversion turned from music, to growing up and what we like.  We found out we have a lot in common, especially our love for Michael Jackson. He found it hard to believe I was 21 and not 19, but I’m sure he was only being nice.

“Hey, by the way, what’s your name?” Abel asked me.

“Madeleine. But you can call me Maddie,” I replied.

“So your name is Maddie, huh?” I nodded “It’s a nice name. It suits you.”

NO. WAY.

We took some pictures on his iPhone, then he asked for my number (for work purposes, of course), saving the picture for my number. Could life get any better?

I leaned a little closer to him and inhaled. He smelt like a mixture of cologne and weed. It was a unique smell, and strangely comforting.

I peered down at the silver watch on my medium brown wrists and looked at the time. 7 o’clock. We had absentmindedly been here for four hours!

“The Wee-Abel it’s been nice, but I’ve got to go. See you around?” I said, trying to act cool.

He looked at me blankly. “Ok. I’ll see you around, I guess.”

I began to stand up, about to walk out the door.

“Maddie! Don’t forget,” Abel started, “We have a concert in like two days, so be a little bit early,”

At first I was slightly confused, and then recognition slowly washed over me. As a treat for his Canadian fans, he was going to have a concert every night for three days, the next two days being the first one. As a back-up singer, I was expected to be there.

“Sure,” I stated, and with that, I walked home.
