Chapter 5: Maddie
I heard my HTC vibrate on my timber nightstand. I tried to read the time on my phone, but my vision was slightly blurry. After my eyes adjusted, I read ’06:00’ off my phone. Time for work!
Slowly rolling myself off my bed, I put my blue furry slippers on each of my feet. I then took my grey pyjamas off, and had a quick lukewarm shower, brushing my teeth in the shower, too. I looked at the misty clock on the bathroom wall. ’06:14’.
I went back into my apartment bedroom, and put on my strapless pink bra and knickers. I then put on a baggy red knit jumper, skinny black jeans and black high tops. I grabbed my light blue minidress from the wardrobe and my black high heels on the floor, putting those into my white faux snake skin bag. Swiftly, put my hair into a quick, messy bun. I snatched my HTC and car keys from the bedside table, then headed out the door.
I got into my Toyota Avensis, then turned the car key in the ignition. Shit. My car was just hopelessly spluttering. I tried again, and it had the same effect. I turned the key in the ignition once more, and a steady humming filled the car. About time. I began my drive to The Opera House, where the concert would be taking place.
After 10 minutes, I arrived at the venue. Seeing the venue filled me with emotions. I remembered a time where the only place people listened to The Weeknd was on their iPod’s. Now, he’s making it big.
I walked into the building, only to be attacked with hugs by Kelly and Muhsinah, the remaining two back-up singers. I met them when we were auditioning to become back-up singers, and the three of us instantly clicked. It was just fate that the three of us were picked to become the back-up singers. After the auditions, I’ve just slowly began to get even closer to them.
“Wow,” I began breathlessly, “This place is very beautiful!”
I began taking in the venue. It was very vast and full of space, all the surfaces polished to perfection. I couldn’t help but notice how my voice echoed around the room.
“I know, right? Anyway, let’s go find the others!” Muhsinah said taking my hand, beginning to drag me up the stairs.
As we got further up the stairs, I could hear singing more and more clearly. The Morning. Abel singing ‘The Morning’. I suddenly felt an uneasy feeling, and wanted to go down the stairs. I knew if I saw him, my nerves would make me do something stupid. Just as I thought that, I was on the second floor. I began to look around the floor, seeing John the drummer practising some beats on the drums. I looked to the right, and saw Lamar on his phone, in deep concentration. I was about to focus my attention on the drumming again, until I was met with deep brown eyes.
Not knowing what to do, I smiled a quick toothless smile. He smiled back, until Lamar walked up to him, and whispered in his ear. He then turned around quickly, so that his back faced me.
Odd. After I collected my thoughts, Kelly, Muhsinah and I walked to the microphones, practising our backing part to ‘Lonely Star’.
