The next day, as Dustin was going over what he had figured out from showing up ridiculously early to Starcourt, and camping out on the roof of the building, Halley had a hard time focusing.
Steve had dropped her off last night just past midnight, and something had felt wrong. She couldn't put her finger on it, but there was a shift around her, something bad. Something that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. She'd checked the house. But Jonathan was with Nancy, her mom was out, and Will was spending the weekend at the Wheeler's. Nothing seemed out of place. She slept even more fitfully than she usually did.
"...They really don't want anybody finding it." Dustin was pacing in front of the open partition window, looking into an empty parlor. It was far too early for anyone to want ice cream.
"There's gotta be a way in," Robin said, her eyes fixed on the freshly clean sheen of the table in front of her.
Steve, who'd been fiddling with his hat, blew its top to a point then tossed it onto the table, "Well, you know..." he started, crossing his arms and leaning in, "I could just take him out."
"Take who out?" Robin asked without missing a beat.
"The Russian guard." He nodded, fully believing in his ability. "What, I sneak up behind him, I knock him out, and I take his keycard. It's easy." He'd pulled his foot onto the chair he was sitting on, resting his elbow on his knee. An air of nonchalance about him, that no one else was buying.
"Did you not hear the part about the massive gun?"
Steve gave a sideways look, his jaw crooked. "Yes, Dustin, I did," he said. "And that's why I would be sneaking." He walked two fingers across the table to emphasize.
"Well, please, tell me this, and be honest," Dustin said, stepping forward towards Steve, "Have you ever actually... won a fight?"
Halley clicked her tongue, pointing at Dustin. That was a very good point.
"Okay, that was one time—"
"No, no hold on, cause didn't you get into a little scuffle with my brother, right?" Halley said, scrunching her eyebrows into a feigned innocent look. He glared at her.
"That doesn't count."
Halley scoffed, but before she could retort, Dustin beat her to it. "Why wouldn't it? It looks like he beat the shit out of you."
"Because he did," Halley chimed."
"You got a fat lip, crooked nose, swollen eye—"
"Ooh, ooh, don't forget the blow to his ego," Halley said, nodding now, she was smiling up at Dustin. "Happened right in front of his old douchebag friends too."
