The world was dark around her as Halley walked. She'd gotten used to the emptiness. It was all that she ever seemed to dream about anymore— if you could call it dreaming. She didn't fully know what it was.
Water splashed under her with every step, the ground rippling beneath her.
There was no one else. There never was. But it didn't stop her from trying to find someone. She'd lost count of how many times she'd ended up back in this place. No matter which way she went, it was always the same, open, nothingness.
She must have walked miles through it, searching for any sign of life. It had to be some sort of hell.
Months ago, when Will had been back in the hospital at Hawkin's lab, she remembered being in this same place. But it would transform. Back then, the blackness around her used to shimmer and shift into uncanny versions of her real world. Furniture and fixtures. People.
She remembered seeing Mike and Will. Seeing Bob.
Halley curled her fingers against her scalp, pulling at her hair trying to ground herself. She had to be going crazy.
She let out a loud, guttural scream. It echoed around her. Bouncing back off walls that she couldn't see and would never reach. She couldn't escape it. Every night she was back. It had to be punishment.
Was Caroline seeing the same thing?
"Are you sure you're okay?" Steve asked for the seventh time, lowering his binoculars to look at Halley beside him in the fake bush. Her eyes were muddled with dark circles, her hair a scroungy mess behind her. She was nursing a travel mug of coffee.
"I'm fine, Harrington." She stifled a yawn by taking a sip. "I was just up late last night. That's it."
He side eyed her, slowly bringing the binoculars back up. "...Fine, but pull it together, you're gonna draw attention to us." She did not point out that the grown man in the sailor uniform peering through a bush was far more suspicious than her being a little tired. She also didn't get the chance, because Dustin hissed at both of them to focus.
"Do you see anything?" he asked, leaning in nearly against Steve like he could press his face close enough to see through the lenses.
Steve, complying with the demand to 'focus', didn't react right away. "Uh, I guess I don't totally know what I'm looking for."
"Evil Russians," Dustin said.
Halley pinched the bridge of her nose feeling a migraine starting to come on. "And what exactly would evil Russians even look like?"
