After a lot of convincing and a few threats, Erica and Dustin settled down enough to fall asleep. Erica was using her backpack as a pillow, and Dustin had ripped the flaps off of the box they had opened.
Halley was watching both of them like a hawk, as she sat with Robin and Steve on the other side of the room.
"I knew this was a bad idea," she whispered. To herself, more than anything else. She was biting her thumbnail, trying to keep her heart from exploding out of her chest. "I can't die down here," She said this to the others, looking away from the sleeping kids.
Steve looked up, his head had been resting on his pulled up knees, hair falling in his face. "We aren't gonna die down here."
She let out a broken sounding scoff. "You don't know that." She looked up at the open hatch on the ceiling. The open nothingness it led to. "We're stuck in a metal box so far underground that we can't even see where we came from, and we can't find a way to get out." She ran both her hands through her hair, pulling a leg up to her chest "My mom's not even gonna know what happened. Fuck, and my brothers— oh my god. Oh my god." She was gonna freak out. Even more than she already was.
"Byers, hey," Steve said, kicking his foot out to tap hers, "we're gonna get out of here." She shook her head, thinking about Jonathan and Will. They were stuck. They were going to either starve down here or be found and killed. Steve saw the thought run through her head, "Halley. We are not gonna die here," He said again. "I promise."
She knew, realistically, that he couldn't promise that. But she also knew that her breaking down wasn't going to help them with anything. Breaking down would, arguably, just make things so much worse.
So she nodded, taking a deep, shaky breath. "You're right," she said, pulling her thumb into a fist, "you're right."
Robin was watching with wide eyes, pretending that she wasn't. "We just have to come up with a plan," she said. And, yes, that was just what they needed to do but it was actually coming up with said plan that would be the difficult part. However, Halley understood that pointing this out would not be beneficial. In any sense of the term.
The room was quiet. Dustin was snoring, slightly, and Halley felt the familiar tug of guilt at being caught in yet another dangerous situation with kids.
"There's no way to climb up there?" Halley asked, her voice steadier now, eyes locked on Steve as she nodded to the ceiling.
He propped an eyebrow at her, seeming almost amused by the question. "Oh, now you're interested in climbing? Didn't sound that way earlier."
"Don't push your luck, Harrington."
"Anyway," Robin cut in, giving them both the 'knock it off' look. "I think if we can break into the keycard reader, cut its cords, it'll short the doors circuits and we can pry it open."
