"For the record, I really don't like this plan," Halley said, sitting on top of the roof with Dustin, Steve, and Robin.
"You've mentioned." Dustin didn't look up from the binoculars. Though, it's not like there was anything for him to see anyway. It was a beautiful night, nearly pitch black if not for the two lights illuminating their surroundings, and not a single Russian spy in sight. However, Halley did appreciate his attention to his lookout position. Even though she would not be verbalizing this.
Erica's voice came from the walkie talkie in Robin's hands, "All right, nerds. I'm there."
Halley felt something loosen in her chest. Not by much, but the relief was there. Part of her was terrified that Erica would go tumbling through an air duct and wind up landing on some display in the JC Penny.
She'd even said this, multiple times, but no one seemed to think her concern was something worth really dwelling on. Besides, Erica took the risk, she agreed. It was a deal. They weren't using her, it was mutually beneficial.
Free ice cream for life didn't really feel like a fair trade given that 'for life' may be significantly shorter than Erica thought when she offered. Halley kept that thought to herself, though.
"Do you—do you see anything?" Robin asked into the receiver, Steve leaned in closer to hear the response.
"Yeah, I see those boring boxes you're so excited about."
"Any guards?" Halley cut in, pulling the walkie towards her. Robin didn't fight it, following the device closer to the other girl.
"Negative."
"Booby traps?" Robin didn't pull back from Halley.
There was a crackle over the line that Halley expected to be Erica laughing. "If I could see them, they'd be pretty shit traps, wouldn't they?"
Robin sucked in a breath, turning to Halley for a moment before responding, "Thank you for that." Halley did not point out that she had a point.
A bang, then a loud drop. Halley held her breath. She could feel her heart in her throat. God, Mrs. Sinclair would kill her if she found out she had a part in her daughter getting murdered by evil Russians.
"I'm in."
Halley blew out a shaky breath letting her head fall back to look up at the starless sky. To her right she could see Steve's hands go to his hair, shaking his head. "Oh, God."
There was another noise. This one Halley didn't recognize, and she pried her eyes away from the safe, Russian-less sky, and looked back to the double doors down on the ground below them. She took the Walkie from Robin again. "You okay in there?"
