"Liltih, slow down. Now what happened?" I asked. On the other end, I heard sobbing. I think she was crying. "I just got a call.... from his mom. She told me he...he had been in car accident. He...He..." She trailed off. I had a good guess at what happened. "Is he, uh, gone?" I asked. I heard a faint 'Yeah' on the other end. She hung up. "What happened?" Luke asked, looking concerned. Tears started forming, but I quickly wiped them away and shook my head. "Nothing," I mumbled and went upstairs. My cat, who I brought over here because I didn't trust my dad with him, Ashel sat on my bed. I shooed him off. I layed down, crying myself to sleep.
The next few weeks went by in a blur. My daily routine was get up, feed myself, Lilith, and Luke, pretend to watch TV, and then sleep. His mom and dad came down and stayed in a hotel. They were currently planning his funeral, taking place here. It would happen next week. I didn't want to attend, but I would. For his parents and Jack.
The funeral came quickly. Too fast for my liking. Lilith insisted for me to wear something more appropriate for a funeral than just black jeans and a sweater. She offered me a dress, wele she forced me into it. She had gone out and bought a nice vest and slacks for Luke. I helped him get ready while she got ready. We then headed out. His parents, Jean and Marcus, wanted the funeral here because Jack loved it here and didn't move with them to California. He stayed here in Oregon. I hadn't bothered listening to the priest, seeing as I didn't want to cry in front of all the people, even though this was a funeral. One girl, blonde hair, blue eyes, seemed upset. Well, understatement. She had been crying since the service began. At the end, the girl walked up to me. "Hi," she said. I lifted an eyebrow. "Oh, you... You probably don't remember me. I'm Kaylee, uh... Jack's cousin." She said. From all the crying, I'm guessing she had the hiccups. That was confirmed. She did have the hiccups. "Oh yea. You came down here during the summer when we were going to 9th grade." It had only been two years, but it felt like forever ago. She nodded. "Yea... I planned to move here this summer... Stay with Jack..." She trailed off. "Oh. Well, you can, uh, if you want, stay with us... I was watching the house and his parents said I could live there," I said. His parents knew about my situation with my family and offered the house to me. I rejected. But they had insisted I stayed, for both myself and my brother. I didn't have full custody of my brother, but he would come over every day after school and stay on the weekends. She shrugged. "I'll, um, think about it." She still seemed upset and now a little mad. I don't know what for. She left with her mom and we went back home. "I can't believe you offered to stay with us. One, rude to do it at his funeral. Two, you didn't show any emotion while talking. Three," I no longer cared what Lilith was saying at this point. I stayed quiet the whole ride home while her list continued.
