The alarm went off at 5:45.
I stared at the ceiling.

Then at the clock.
Then back at the ceiling.

Five more minutes.

Just five.

I closed my eyes for just a second

Then

"Shit!"

I shot out of bed so fast my blanket went with me.

6:27

"No, no, no"

I scrambled across my tiny apartment, nearly tripping over the slippers beside my bed as I rushed toward the bathroom.

I was going to be late.

Again.

Twenty minutes later, I was running down the street with a piece of toast between my teeth, one hand holding my bag against my side while the other desperately tried to button my coat.

Not exactly graceful.

My mother would've been horrified.

A woman of our family should look effortless.

The memory came without warning.

My steps slowed for a second.

Then I swallowed the last bite of toast and kept walking.

That wasn't my family anymore.

That wasn't my life anymore.

"Morning."

"Sensei! Haruto took my pencil!"

"I did not!"

"You literally have it in your hand!"

"I found it!"

I stopped in the doorway of my classroom.

Twenty-eight faces stared back at me.

Haruto slowly lowered the very obviously stolen pencil beneath his desk.

I stared at him.

He stared at me.

"Give it back."

"Haruto."

He immediately handed it over.

"Thank you."

A few students giggled as I walked toward my desk.

This was my life now.

No guards outside my door.

No expensive cars waiting for me.

No silk kimonos laid across my bed.

No men sitting around tables discussing territory, alliances, bloodlines...

Marriage.

I placed my bag beside my desk.

"Textbooks out."

A collective groan filled the room.

I almost smiled.

Almost.

My name was Saki now.

At least, that's what everyone here knew me as.
