Rey's POV

I sat in my hotel room, scrolling through my phone, flicking mindlessly through old messages as I rested my sore body. The fights had been intense, but nothing I couldn't handle. Still, the aches lingered. I needed time to recover.

Eventually, I shot a quick update to Evan—let him deal with the boss. I wasn't in the mood to hear that bastard's voice. He'd just talk shit about how slow things were moving, like he had any idea what it was like on the ground.

I'd fought my way up from nothing. Broken bones, split skin, sleepless nights—I earned every damn scar. Japan wasn't some detour. It was the mission. I wasn't leaving without what I came for.

I exhaled, staring at the ceiling.

This country was strange. Too clean. Too quiet. People moved like they didn't know fear. Like their ghosts didn't follow them around.

But every place had its demons. Some just buried them deeper.

And then... there was her.

Flor.

No—Ume.

My ribs still throbbed where she'd kicked me. I didn't expect her to be that strong.

I'd trained for years. Rebuilt myself from the ground up. Fast. Precise. Dangerous. And yet—she stood her ground.

She took the hit and got up.

"I'm still standing."

Those words echoed. Not just because they hurt. But because they were hers.

That was new.

The Flor I remembered had been soft. Always clinging to my side, wide-eyed and quiet, trailing behind me like my shadow.

But Ume?

Ume stared me down. She swung first. She didn't flinch.

I clenched my jaw, tossing the phone onto the table.

She wasn't who I remembered.

She was the enemy now.

Not because I wanted her to be—

But because this place had made her one.

They stole her. Lied to her. Warped her. Changed her name, her mind.

And now she looked at me like I was the villain.

I wasn't mad that she fought back.
I was mad she thought she had to.

She didn't understand.

This wasn't about revenge. It was about fixing what they broke.

I grabbed my phone again, thumbs moving fast.

Me - | I found her and I've handled most of the business things.|

Simple. Efficient. That was all Evan needed.

My phone buzzed a minute later.

Evan - | Good dog.|

I stared at it.

My jaw tightened.

I almost typed something back—some half-assed response—but stopped.

Something in my gut twisted.

Something feels Wrong....

I'd learned a long time ago to trust that feeling.

The silence in the room suddenly felt heavier.
I leaned back, eyes drifting shut, but sleep didn't come easy.

Evan's POV

Most of the men we came with had already flown out. I stayed behind with a few. We blended into Tokyo's shadows—quiet, clean, forgettable. Japan was different. Peaceful in the way a loaded gun on the table could be. Just waiting.

I liked it here.

More than back home.
Sometimes, I almost forgot what we were here for.

Then my phone buzzed.

Rey - | I found her and I've handled most of the business things.|

Of course he did.

Short. Blunt. Loyal.

Poor bastard.

He still thought this was about family....

I opened my contacts and called the boss.

The line didn't even ring twice.

"What the fuck do you want, Evan? I'm walking into a meeting with the godfather."

No hello. No time for bullshit.

I leaned against the hotel balcony, city lights flickering beneath me like fireflies.

He was going to enjoy this.

"The dog found your lost treasure."

Silence.

Then a breath—measured, sharp.

"Send me your location."

Click.

I smiled to myself.

Rey thought he was bringing her home.
Thought this was about reunions. Redemption.

But the boss has other plans

He saw a legacy with that woman

She was power. History. A tool.

And the second he had her?

He wouldn't need Rey anymore.

Time to put the fucking dog down..
