“You’re going to kill us.” I said, crossing my arms over my chest.
“Don’t be such a joy kill Tabi!” Ace said to me, not taking his eyes off the road. I wasn’t being a joy kill! He was the one going 75 miles per hour in a 25 zone! I huffed and stared out the window, the houses quickly flying by. I was pulled from my thoughts as the car started to slow down to a stop. That’s when I noticed the flashing red and blue lights coming from behind us. My mouth slightly dropped open and then I coughed to hide my laughter. Ace lightly hit my arm.
“Keep your mouth shut!” Ace snapped at me. I nodded and looked down at my lap. Ace flicked the music off as the officer came up to the window and asked Ace for his license and registration. Ace handed it over without a word.
The officer walked back to his car and I giggled.
“Why are you laughing?” Ace glared at me. I looked up at him meeting his gray eyes.
“Because! That’s what you get!” I said back completely serious.
“Get for what?” He shouted at me. I pursed my lips at him.
“Trying to kill me!” He smirked.
“I could try to kill you in other ways.” He winked at me. I blushed and looked out the front window.
“Oh really? I doubt you could.” I joked. I glanced at him. He was still smirking.
‘Oh yeah. I won’t do it here though, because there’s a police officer outside.” I giggled as the officer came back, ticket in hand.
“Well Mr. Reed, here is you ticket. No more speeding and endangering the lives of others please. This is your last warning. Pay your tickets, or get your license revoked.” The officer said grimly. Ace glared at the steering wheel and nodded his head. As the officer walked away, Ace wiped a hand over his face and exhaled angrily.
I bit my lip and stared at Ace. Just a second ago we were joking around. What changed? Ace opened the glove box and stuck the ticket inside. I other pieces of paper, just like the ones he had stuck into it. Wow. Someone didn’t pay his tickets.
As he closed the glove box, I caught a glance of a picture taped to the side of it. The picture was of a young woman holding a baby. The woman had long curly blonde hair and the same grey eyes as Ace. I assumed it was his mother. Was Ace close to his mom? I wondered about his relationship with his mom as we pulled up to the school.
“Hey. We’re here.” Ace said getting out of the car and slamming the door, breaking my train of thought. I got out of the car and got my stuff out of the trunk.
“Are you coming or not?” Ace yelled at me already halfway across the parking lot. I huffed.
“You could help me, ya know.” I said under my breath. No wait; of course he wouldn’t this was Ace we were talking about here. He only ever does anything for himself. I started walking towards the band room when I tripped over a crack in the cement. I caught my balance, but everything in my hands fell to the ground. I groaned and kneeled down to grab my mace.
I inspected the damage, which didn’t seem too extensive, as far as I could tell. I noticed that I was missing one of my water bottles and noticed it was rolling away. I sighed and started walking to get it, but someone beat me to it. Grey was standing in front of me, water bottle in hand.
“Lose something?” He smirked. I smiled.
“I might have.” I said biting my lip. He handed me the bottle and looked at me, then my mace, slowly getting an enlightened look on his face.
“You’re one of those girls?” He asked teasingly. What did he mean one of those girls? I gave him a confused look. He chuckled at me. “You’re a band kid.” He stated. I blushed.
“Band nerd and proud!” I laughed. Grey smiled at me.
“Good! Glad I’ll know someone.” He said as we started walking.
“You’re in band?” I said dumbly. He was here, knowing I was in band, so he had to be in band.
“Nope.” He said, completely serious. I furrowed my eyebrows.
“Then why are you here?”
“My uncle is the director.” He said simply. “My parents are making me go to this camp thing, because they want me to make friends, and considering my uncle is the teacher, he doesn’t mind if I sit in and watch.” Mr. Stevenson was Grey’s uncle. Strange small world we live in. “I might join band though, if I don’t get too busy.” He stated after a moment of silence.
“Busy with what?” I asked, as he opened the door to the band room for me.
“After-school activities.” He laughed. I thought about this for a second.
“Damn Tabi! Where have you been? Ace called from across the room.
I shook my head. “I dropped all this stuff that you so kindly didn’t help me carry.” I said sarcastically. Grey stifled a laugh and Ace shot daggers at him.
“I’m going to go talk to my uncle okay?” Grey told me. I nodded in understanding and set my waters in one of the lockers. Looking at the clock, I noticed that we still had ten minutes to relax and wait for other people to show up. I sat down back against the locker and plugged my iPod into one ear. “Therapy” by All Time Low started playing and I hummed along, laying my head back against the locker and closing my eyes.
I sensed someone sit down next to me and pick up the spare headphone. I glanced over, only opening one eye to see Grey sitting next to me. I smiled slightly and closed my eye again. We sat in silence for a few moment, listening to the music play, before Grey said “Hey Tabi?”
I looked at him with an eyebrow raised. “Yes?” Grey blushed a little bit and cleared his throat.
“Well-uh. I was kinda wondering…” He stammered. I giggled as he rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “Do you think uhm…Maybe you wanna grab a coffee or something after this?” He said quickly, looking into my eyes.
I blushed but before I could say anything, the moment was rudely interrupted. Ace had decided that he would come and lay down in my lap. I glared at Ace. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I said annoyed. Ace ignored me. I scoffed and looked back at Grey.
“I’m sorry. He’s an ass and can’t control himself.” I said seriously, under my breath. Grey chuckled. “And about getting coffee? I’d love to!” I giggled. Grey’s face lit up, but I felt Ace tense up slightly.
Wonder what that was all about…
