I have to rush with the introduction, not because I'm shy, which I'm not, but because my Pre-Cal professor has been glaring in my direction for quite a while now. Not that I mind, I'm used to all the attention in class, but today for a change I don't know what is going on. I've been busy watching a video on my iPhone. Now, it's not everyday that you accidentally find your favourite celebrity's interview, right?
It started during the second hour French class. I was bored out of my mind and pulled out my phone to check for new messages. When I found none, instead of switching my phone off like I should've, I decided to stalk this guy Aaron Mason, the vocalist/pianist of the rock band, D-Day. When I found a new interview of his available on the Internet, my happiness knew no bounds. And the rest is history. (By which I mean I haven't been concentrating on classes for the last two hours.)
"So, Ms. Buckley, could you explain this problem to the class?"
I sat upright in my chair when I heard the professor address me. Thankfully, I am kind of a genius when it comes to Pre-cal. It took me exactly ten seconds to understand the problem and come up with a solution.
"Uh, of course, Mr. Baker." I said, trying hard to not sound too superior. "We start with the-"
"To the class, if you may?"
"Sure." I turned to face my classmates. Some of them looked up from their books, some rolled their eyes. "Let's begin by solving the first part here..."
When I was done explaining the problem, half the class seemed to have dozed off. I made a mental note to myself to never take up teaching, especially not Math. But Mr. Baker seemed pleased with me, his grin proved the point.
"Very good, Ms. Buckley. Now, who will solve the next problem?"
I stifled a yawn and went back to the interview I had been watching, now assured I wouldn't be disturbed for another half hour. I did my best to keep it low but owing to his sarcastic humor, a few giggles escaped at times. By the end of the class, I had managed to watch the entire video twice, without interruption. Pleased with myself, I got up and collected my belongings to leave.
"Hey," I heard a voice from behind me and turned. "I couldn't help but notice how distracted you were in class today. You alright?"
I sighed in relief when I saw that it was only Gwen. I've known her all my life and yet, we both are just casual friends. "Yeah, Gwen. I am."
"Okay," she smiled and left.
The thing about me is I don't make friends because I'm supposed to. I believe friendships, like relationships, are things that happen on their own, they're predestined. Gwen and I never got along so we never got close, like with most people in my life. I've a small group of friends and I stick to them, no matter what.
Once I reached the canteen I waited for my friends, barely able to control the excitement.
"Sarah!" I heard Melanie's voice and turned in her direction.
"Mel, come over here. I found a new video of-" Before I could finish my sentence, she was already beside me. Her eyes had transformed themselves into some kind of luminous things and were shining too brightly. "- Aaron," I finished anyway.
"Show me!"
She was jumping up and down beside me as I played the video for her. Now this was the kind of excitement I was expecting from everyone. I mean, it's Aaron Mason, for God's sake. You can't not lose your cool when it's him. Her eyes were glued to the screen the moment she saw him. "So gorgeous," she kept saying and I couldn't help wonder how I had looked when I was watching the video.
"So gorgeous," I repeated after her.
This went on for almost the entire lunch hour. My other two friends who joined us at the table weren't much interested, one of them being a guy (Drake) and the other an anti fangirl (Tasha), but still watched the video with me. I barely noticed what I ate, or if I ate at all.
Our serious session of ogling at the screen was interrupted when we noticed a motion beside us.
"Isn't that Aaron Mason? I love him!" A junior squealed, trying to join us at our table.
All of us looked up at once, glaring at the girl for the distraction she had caused. I understand the excitement you feel when you see Aaron, but trying to sit at the senior's table with the seniors isn't acceptable under any circumstances.
Noticing the glares she was receiving, the girl seemed to back down a little. A wide grin was still plastered to her face despite the glares and it made me both happy and sad at the same time that Aaron had fans like me everywhere. I wasn't alone in this.
"Haley, let's go!" Someone hissed behind her, pulling her out of our sight.
"Kids these days," I sighed.
"Yes, Grandma," Drake teased. "Now if you're done watching the video can we leave?"
I nodded and got up from my seat. Melanie and Tasha quickly finished their lunch and joined me.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you," Drake said, slowing his pace. "Aaron bought a flat in our apartment. He's shifting there soon."
I almost wanted to smack his face. Not only for being so nonchalant about it but for forgetting to tell me this in the first place. But somehow I found it hard to speak, to even utter a word.
"How could you forget to tell us that, Drake?" Melanie hissed.
He shrugged. "I have more important things to remember."
"Of course you do," she said, swinging her backpack deliberately so it would hit him, which it did.
"Ouch!" Drake groaned as Melanie ran to the door. He picked up his bag and was soon chasing her down the corridor.
"Guys, no running in the hallway! Come on," Tasha was screaming but they couldn't hear her. "I need to get to them before anyone else does. Duty calls." She said, already on her way out.
"Sure," I said to nobody in particular. My mind was blocking everything happening around me and was recalling only what Drake had said, over and over in my head.
Aaron bought a flat in our apartment. He's shifting there soon.
My breathing was unbelievably fast and it was getting faster with every passing moment. I was overwhelmed by this bit of news because I lived only two blocks away from Drake's.
