Sunday went by too quickly and I woke up to a Monday that I dreaded. Mondays meant tests at school, which would've been fine with me normally. But this week I hadn't studied and I knew I was in trouble. Quickly I went through my options;
1. Can't skip school, Adrian's first day.
2. Can't skip classes, Emily will kill me.
3. Can't cheat, because I don't know how to.
I realised I was doomed.Putting on a brave front, I got ready for school. It was the last day Melanie was supposed to pick me up as my car would be ready by tonight (long story short, I crashed it while trying to park.)
"Look at you, you look gorgeous!" Melanie whistled. She removed the key from the ignition and killed the engine. "Grab me a bite of whatever Emily's prepared for you, I'm starving."
"She came back late, I guess. She's still asleep. I have yesterday's leftover pizza, though."
"Frankly, honey, I'd eat anything right now."
I ran inside and grabbed the pizza, heated it and walked out of the door. The thing with Melanie is, she always lets you pay back for her favours, even when you don't feel like it. But, of course, I'm not complaining.
"Thanks, babe." She mumbled, thanks to mouth full of pizza, "so what's the surprise?"
"Wait for it."
We drove in silence until we reached school. I noticed something was off about her, but decided to play it cool. Melanie parked in between Drake's and Tasha's cars (which actually is my parking space, but I don't say anything) and killed the engine.
"So, meet you during lunch?" Her smile was back and so was mine.
"Sure." I turned to climb out of the car but stopped. "And Mel, thank you for picking me up. I know you had to lose at least an hour's sleep for me and I appreciate the effort."
Melanie just stared at me for a moment. Then her face broke into a huge smile and she hugged me. "God, you're such an idiot."
Though I had questions about how being thankful made me an idiot, I resisted asking her. As we walked towards our lockers, Drake passed by me and slipped a note in my hand. I crumpled it up and shoved it in my pocket before I made my way to my first class of the day, Pre-Cal.
Once I was seated, I flattened out the note Drake had given me. It had a number and a message.
Talk to Adrian. So I picked out my phone and texted Adrian asking him if he had found his way to his first class. He replied in no time.
Adrian: Sarah, I love this place! No one freaking knows me here and it's all so... normal.
Me: Awesome. See if you have a free hour before lunch, need to talk.
Adrian: Nope. But I don't think I want to attend the third hour. It's math!!!!!
Me: Lol. Alright then. Meet me in the cafeteria at 11.
Adrian: It's a date. ;)
I winced at the last message. I hoped he wasn't making fun of me for saying that to his brother on Saturday night. But I was also sure that he knew. I decided to forego my thoughts and concentrate on the test. Thankfully for me, the problems were all easy. I finished it right on time and Mr. Baker smiled at me before taking my paper.
"How did you do, Sarah?" He asked me, curiosity evident in his voice. "You took more time than usual today."
"I got confused, Mr. Baker. The, um, theorems are confusing." I smiled back at him, praying and hoping he'd buy it.
"Oh, well. You know where to find me if you need any help," he said as he walked away.
I nodded while I stared at the back of his head. I always hated the way he got excited about helping us with the subject. Don't get me wrong, he's one of the most decent teachers you could get, and we all respect him for that. But his love for Math was just too much to take at times.
Second hour breezed by without much incident and I made my way to the cafeteria, expecting Adrian. I found him already seated in the back row, right by the ice cream booth, which is where we always sat. Drake, Melanie, Tasha and I: the seniors. I reminded myself that it was only Adrian and he had the golden ticket for the seat as I reached him.
"Sarah!" He jumped up the moment he saw me, "girl, you never told me you were so famous here!"
"Huh?"
"Everyone knows you. All I had to do was take your name and people were treating me like royalty!" He was grinning at me, ear to ear. "I was just talking to Aaron about the same."
I giggled at that. Adrian had no idea how much more of a royalty he'd be treated as if only everyone knew who he was. I took a seat in front of him and smiled at him.
"First of all, you're sitting on a senior's bench. Didn't anyone tell you?"
"They did. Loads of people did. But like I said, I just took your name and they began retracing their path. It was fun!"
I laughed. "It's my friends. Drake is the captain of the school's football team, Melanie is the head cheerleader and Tasha is the head girl. I'm just with the right people, that's all," I shrug.
"Aaron told me you were modest, but God, Sarah! I know you were the Prom Princess last year, and everyone already think you'll be the Prom Queen this year."
I rolled my eyes, my junior year was not something I wanted him to know about. Changing the topic, I decided to brief him about the do's and don'ts. I told him all about my friends and the juniors I knew who he was safe to befriend. I had no idea why I felt so elder sisterly towards him, but maybe it had a little bit to do with the fact that he was Aaron's brother.
"Oh, and you can sit with us for lunch for as long as you want. If anyone asks-"
"I'll just say, 'Sarah'."
I laughed and punched him on his shoulder. The final bell went off, reminding me I had Botany next. I reminded Adrian to meet me again during lunch and rushed out of the cafeteria.
