Brendon hadn't slept.

He'd tried.

At some point around four in the morning, one of the detectives had convinced him to sit down in the hotel room they'd commandeered as a temporary base. Someone had brought him coffee. Someone else had brought him water and food he hadn't touched.

He'd sat on the edge of the bed with his elbows on his knees and stared at the floor.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Abby.

Not as she might be now.

As she'd been yesterday morning.

Thirteen years old and slightly annoyed because he'd reminded her three times to bring her jacket.

She'd rolled her eyes at him.

He'd kissed the top of her head anyway.

See you after the show.

He had said it.

He'd promised it.

And then she'd disappeared.

Brendon opened his eyes.

The room was beginning to brighten.

Grey morning light seeped around the curtains.

For a moment, he didn't remember where he was.

Then everything came back.

Abby.

The gallery.

Bonnie.

The CCTV.

The woman.

The dark vehicle.

His stomach twisted.

He reached for his phone.

There were thirty-seven missed notifications.

Messages from people he knew.

Messages from people he didn't.

His manager.

His publicist.

Band contacts.

Friends.

People from the tour.

He ignored them.

There was only one person he wanted to hear from.

The door opened.

Brendon looked up so quickly that his neck hurt.

Detective Collins stepped inside.

Brendon was already standing.

"Anything?"

Collins hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

"Not yet."

Brendon closed his eyes.

For a second, he couldn't speak.

"We've made progress overnight," Collins added quickly. "The vehicle is giving us something to work with."

Brendon looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

"We've confirmed the vehicle seen near Trafalgar Square is a dark-coloured SUV. We're working through traffic-camera footage and ANPR data to establish where it went after it left the area."

"How long?"

"We don't know."

"Can you find it?"

"We're trying."
