Abby woke slowly.
For a few seconds, she didn't know where she was.
There was sunlight.
That was the first thing she noticed.
Not bright sunlight. The grey, washed-out light of a London morning filtering through the window.
She blinked at the ceiling.
Then she remembered.
The gallery.
Bonnie.
The woman.
The car.
The room.
Abby's stomach tightened.
She sat up quickly.
The blanket slid into her lap.
She was still wearing yesterday's clothes.
Her shoes were beside the bed now.
She didn't remember taking them off.
For a moment, she wondered if the woman had done it.
She pulled her knees toward her chest.
The room looked exactly as it had the night before.
The dresser.
The chair.
The lamp.
The window.
Abby climbed off the bed and went straight to the window.
She pressed her fingers against the glass.
Daylight made the strange film more obvious.
She could make out shapes beyond it, but nothing clearly enough to tell where she was.
A building, perhaps.
Or another wall.
She couldn't tell.
She tried the handle again.
Nothing.
She pushed harder.
Nothing.
Abby stepped back.
She looked at the door.
There was no way out.
She hadn't slept well.
She'd kept waking up every few minutes, listening for footsteps, listening for the door, listening for anything that might tell her where she was.
Now the room was quiet again.
Almost peaceful.
That frightened her more.
Then she heard the lock.
Abby jumped.
The door opened.
The woman stood there holding a tray.
For a second, Abby just stared.
The woman walked inside and set the tray on the dresser.
"Good morning."
Abby didn't answer.
The woman looked at her.
"Did you sleep?"
"A little."
Her voice was hoarse.
The woman nodded.
