Abby didn't sleep.
She tried.
She lay beneath the blanket with her eyes closed and counted.
One hundred.
Two hundred.
Three hundred.
It didn't help.
Every sound seemed louder at night.
The pipes.
The traffic outside.
A car door somewhere below.
Footsteps in the hallway.
The occasional rumble of a bus.
London.
She knew that now.
She was still in London.
Her father was somewhere in the same city.
And he was looking for her.
Abby turned onto her side and stared at the door.
The woman had told her nothing.
But Abby had learned enough.
The police had the SUV.
They had her bracelet.
They had the piece of paper.
They knew she'd been inside the vehicle.
And if the woman was frightened by that, then the police must be getting closer.
Abby pulled the blanket tighter around herself.
She thought about the bracelet.
She hadn't dropped it.
She had taken it off.
She remembered the moment clearly.
The man had been watching the road.
The woman had been talking.
And Abby had slipped the bracelet from her wrist and tucked it beneath the edge of the seat.
She hadn't known if anyone would find it.
She hadn't known if it would matter.
But they had found it.
Her father knew.
She smiled despite herself.
Just a tiny smile.
He knew.

Across London, Brendon was sitting at the same table he'd been sitting at for hours when his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Every person in the room looked at it.
Nobody spoke.
The detective gestured toward the phone.
"Don't answer yet."
Brendon stared at the screen.
His heart was beating so hard he could feel it in his throat.
The phone stopped.
Silence.
Then it rang again.
The detective nodded.
"Answer."
Brendon picked it up.
"Hello?"
Nothing.
Then a voice.
