The detective found Brendon just before eight in the morning.

He had been sitting in the same chair for so long that his back had gone numb.

There was a paper cup of coffee on the table beside him. He hadn't touched it. A second one had gone cold sometime around five. His phone was in his hand, though he wasn't looking at it anymore. There was nothing new to see.

No calls.

No messages.

No Abby.

The detective approached with another officer behind him.

"Mr. Urie?"

Brendon looked up immediately.

Something in the detective's expression made him stand.

"What?"

The detective stopped a few feet away.

"We've found Bonnie."

For one second, Brendon couldn't process the words.

Then his entire body seemed to wake up at once.

"Where?"

"She's alive."

Brendon swallowed.

"Where is she?"

"She's at a hospital."

His eyes closed briefly.

Relief hit him so hard it almost made his knees buckle.

Bonnie.

Alive.

He'd spent the last several hours imagining the worst possible outcomes for both of them. Every time the phone rang, he'd prepared himself to hear something terrible.

"Can I see her?"

"Yes. But there's something you need to understand first."

Brendon's eyes opened.

The relief was already disappearing.

"What?"

The detective hesitated.

"She doesn't know where Abby is."

Brendon stared at him.

"She was with Abby."

"We know."

"Then how—"

"They were separated."

The words landed heavily.

Brendon looked away.

For the first time since he'd been told Abby was missing, he'd allowed himself to imagine that finding Bonnie might mean finding his daughter too.

That hope lasted less than a minute.

"Is she conscious?"

"She's awake. She has a head injury and some bruising. The doctors are keeping her under observation."

"Does she remember what happened?"

"Some of it."

Brendon nodded.

"Take me to her."

--

Bonnie woke to the sound of a machine beeping.

For several seconds, she didn't know where she was.

The ceiling was white.

The light was too bright.
