The wreckage of my past keeps haunting me, it just won't leave me alone.
Ozzy Osborne, Road to Nowhere

Alice Hemmings -

After Evangeline left, I knew that she was upset. I got up to follow her, but Luke grabbed my arm.

" Just let her cool off. It's not you sweet, it's that episode she had last week. " He said softly. I leaned back into his chest and thought about what had just happened. I had felt some urge in the back of my mind telling me to go for Mentor Calum instead of the bag. I have no clue why, this has never been heard of in vampire history, a vampire attacking another vampire. From what I've heard in the texts, it's punishable by death. The court rarely has to use the death penalty, but when they do, they always use the Old Ways.

The Old Ways are laws that were in place when the first vampires formed the court. The death penalty was being tied to a stake and burnt while others, including your family, watched. It was cruel but it kept people abiding the law.

I had just broken the law, and that means if Mentor Calum reports me to Queen Rosanna Clifford, then I was to die. I started breathing heavily and Luke just gripped me tighter.

" What happens now? I broke the law, is Calum going to report me? " I ask, my lip quivering. Luke was quiet for a moment.

" I'll be sure that he doesn't, Rabbit. You're a new, you wont do it again. " Luke said, almost as if he was trying to convince himself of the statement. I nodded slowly.

The tears came and went in the half an hour we were sat on my bed, and Evangeline still wasn't back.

" Luke I'm worried about Eva. She still isn't back. " I said, sitting up slightly to look at him. He sighed.

" I'll go and look for her, you stay here. " He said, walking out of the room reluctantly.

Evangeline Hemmings -

I was sitting on the bench in the woods just outside of our home. It has always been a place I go to when I want to think or just get away. The snow fell silently around me as I sat in the freezing cold, just waiting to feel normal again.

What even is normal for me anymore? After Mom and Dad died when I was 13, things just weren't the same. The normality in my life went out of the window, Luke started to work harder in training and I had to take over my mother's role in the house with cooking and keeping up with cleaning. On top of everything, we were all still attending school.

It still hurts, the fact that all my other friends had a normal family. They never had to get up early to do laundry or stay up late cleaning. They all had a mom or dad, they all had a source of income to supply them with clothes and other things. They never had to worry about how they were going to make the next utilities bill, they only had to worry about the next exam or training that day.

I sucked in a deep breath and blew it out, watching my exhaled breath soar through the frigid air. I hear the sound of snow crunching behind me, so I quickly whipped around to see who was approaching.

" Luke. What are you doing here? Why aren't you watching Alice? " I asked worriedly, popping up from my seat on the bench.

" She wanted me to come and find you, she'll be fine. " He said, sitting down on my bench. I sat back down next to him, looking out onto the the cliff. The trees were covered in snow from the night before, the first one of the season. " It really is pretty out here, isn't it? " He said softly, reaching out to grab my hand. I nodded silently.

" I need to tell you something that I've kept a secret for a long time. With everything that's happened, and the vision that you got, you deserve to know the truth. " Luke said, breaking the comfortable silence.

" O-Okay. " I said shakily. He grabbed my hand, letting me know he was going to project something in my mind. I nodded and closed my eyes as he did.

Luke was sat in his bedroom, reading a book when he heard an ear-splitting scream. Sitting up instantly, he slammed closed the reading material and ventured out of his room. Alice and Evangeline were both at a friend's house working on a school project for the night, so he knew they were out of danger.

He crept the silent halls, peeking in every room until he reached his parents room. The door was cracked open, and Luke's heartbeat quickened at the thought of what might be on the other side of the door. Pushing it open his jaw dropped.

" MAMA! PAPA! " He screamed, running over to his parents and dropping to his knees. His Papa was lying on the ground, covered in blood. His mother was draped on his lifeless body, also covered in blood. " What happened?! " He demanded loudly to his mother. " Why is he not moving?! Did you kill him?! " He screamed. His mother just sobbed harder. Luke got up from the ground, tears streaming down his face, and ran to the phone. Dialing the first number he could think of, he sobbed into the phone what had happened.

Twenty minutes later the whole court was at the Hemmings household, and it turned out that his mother had killed Papa. She drained him of all his blood, but claimed to not have been in control of herself.

Two weeks later she had undergone the death penalty, but since the children were so young they were not forced to watch their mother being killed. No one ever spoke of the incident since it happened to such a high up family.

Luke dropped my hands and I instantly flung myself into his arms sobbing. We were both thinking the same thing from what he said next.

" We can't let this happen to Alice. You have to promise me to keep a close eye on her. I'm leaving in a few hours and you need to be able to care for her. " He said. Still clutching his shoulders in a long embrace I nodded.

" I will not let this happen any sooner than it has to. The longer we prolong this, the better chances of combating the outcome with be. " I replied.

" I agree. Let's head back. " He said, grabbing my hand and leading me towards the house. The snow was now falling harder than before, and my hair was covered in a thin layer of the substance.

" I'm scared. " I blurted out. He stopped dead in his tracks.

" I am too, but we can afford to be. We have to show no weakness to Alice. I will inform Margo that Alice will need to go through extra intensive impulse control training, but you will have to help her at home and at school. You mustn't be afraid little one. " He said, brushing my cheek, tilting my head up slightly to make eye contact with him.

" I'll try Luke, for you. "
