I'm in this fight, and I'm swinging and my arms are getting tired
-Scared of Lonely, BeyonceEvangeline Hemmings-
He's officially gone. Luke left this morning, and that means Alice and I have to return to school.
I put on a pair of skinny jeans, converse, and a baggy navy blue sweater. I decided to leave my hair in its natural waves and grabbed my knapsack from my desk chair. On the way out my bedroom door I stopped in front of the full-length mirror. " You'll be okay, you got this. " I told myself under my breath. I threw on a grey beanie and bounded down the large staircase to the kitchen to make breakfast, but Alice was one step ahead of me.
" Good morning Alice. " I mumbled, sitting at the island and biting into an apple I picked up.
" Morning Eva. " She replied, sitting next to me with a bowl of oatmeal. She was wearing a grey crop top sweater, a long black skirt, and a red scarf.
" Are you ready for today? Because I am, I could really use a distraction from all that's been happening. " I sighed honestly, no matter how much I disliked school, anything would be better than mulling over my thoughts that were clouded with Alice. She nodded quietly and we ate in silence.
" We should get going if we want to make it on time. " Alice said, breaking the silence. I nodded and grabbed my longboard while she hopped into her friends car. I much preferred boarding to school because it gives me time by myself before being thrown into a pit of teens.
I got to school earlier than usual so I just boarded to the spot where my friends and I hung out, and waited. I sat on my longboard and watched my breath exit my mouth in front of me.
" Evangeline!! " I heard a screech coming from behind me, followed by the pounding of feet on the pavement. I jumped up from my spot and turned around quickly. I saw it was Mentor Michael's little sister and my best friend, Gisela Clifford.
" Gisa! " I yelled and ran to her, engulfing her into my arms. We talked for a few minutes, me playing with her blonde locks. After a little while we were joined our other close friends, Carr, Rylee Hood, Marci Ronan, Kacey Irwin, and Matilda Gorge. Matilda was indeed a human, but we all adored her and she had no idea we were vampires.
Rylee was a really close friend of mine. She was Mentor Calum's younger cousin, and he introduced us. Marci was very quiet and reserved, yet she was very insightful and gave great advice to our friend group. Kacey, she was loud and rambunctious, and didn't know how to use her inside voice very well. She was the party animal. Kacey wasn't closely related to Mentor Ashton, they were second or third cousins. Matilda was a very sweet girl, and I was very close to her.
" I'm glad to see you back Eva. I missed you " Matilda whispered into my ear as she engulfed me into a big hug.
" I missed you too. " I whispered back. I greeted the rest of my friends with hugs and kisses on cheeks. By the time we had slowly started catching up, the warning bell rung through the campus, so we bid goodbye until lunch.
The first half of my day was quite uneventful and filled with sympathetic glances and warm welcome backs. I was less than grateful for the mock sympathy that was being thrown my way. This happened to lots of people, their brothers, mothers, sisters, and fathers are taken by the crown all the time. I don't see why people are making such a huge deal out of Luke being gone.
Lunch came and passed, and after I left my friends I sought out Alice. I found her alone on a bench outside, a new blanket of November snow falling softly around her.
" How have you been today? " I asked, sitting next to her and placing a hand on her knee. She shrugged and stayed silent, keeping her eyes trained to the ground.
" I'm serious. You need to tell exactly how the day has gone, even if it was uneventful. " I said seriously, hoping my tone would snap her out of whatever haze was fogging her mind.
" It's so much harder than I imagined Birdie. It's so hard. " She whispered as I saw a silent tear drop onto her lap. I got up from my seat and knelt on the cold ground in front of her. Cupping her rosy cheeks in my hands and softly wiped the tears from her face.
" I know darling. I'm so sorry. " I whispered back. I had no clue how to respond to her because I myself had not had her particular... Problem. With there being equally as many humans and vampires at St. Charlie's Prep School, I could only imagine how hard these impulses were hitting her. She just clung to me and sobbed into my neck. I rubbed her back and shushed her, realizing that she couldn't stay here for the rest of the day. I grabbed my phone and called Margo, informing her that she needed to get Alice immediately and start with resistance training.
" Margo will be here in five minutes. " I informed her as she cried into my shoulder. I just rubbed her back and, clueless as to what to do to make her feel better. Alice's breathing evened out and I could feel her breath on my neck.
" What are you doing. " I whispered, tempted to pull away, but stayed put for the comfort of Alice.
" You smell nice. " She whispered back, placing a chaste kiss on my collarbone before pulling away.
" I should get to class before I'm late. " I muttered before grabbing my things and almost sprinting in the direction of my biology class. I just had to get away from Alice as fast as I could. Things with her are worse than I thought, and what makes me sick to my stomach is, I can't do one goddamned thing about it.
