"Heeeeey, Sophie!" Taylor said and sat down next to me. She handed me a milkshake.
"Uhh thanks. Hey!" I said.
"You here for Jason?"
"Yeah." I said and smiled at her.
"Same."
I rolled my eyes and watched him spike the ball over the net.
"So, did he take you to the tree house yet? And to dinner? And now, you're at the volley ball game." She chuckled to herself.
"Uhh, yeah. Why?"
"Just wondering. He did that with me too. We layed there and looked at the stars. He told me I was the first one up there. And his dad built it for him."
I swallowed hard and looked at her. "I thought I was the first..."
"No, he told that to Rachel, too. And Lindsey. No one's ever the first. He just makes it feel like you're special, huh?"
"Yeah I really..." I trailed off, not finishing my sentence. I was excited that I was the first one he showed. I swallowed again and stood up.
"I-I should go." I left my milkshake and Taylor waved after me.
"Bye, Soph! I'll see you Monday!" She blew a kiss and shouted for Jason. I stumbled across the court as the referee called a time out.
"Sophie! Wait up!" I turned around to see Jason running after me. "Where are you going?"
"I'm leaving." I said.
"What? Why?"
"Listen, Jason. Do you know how long I've been without someone actually loving me? Or caring about me, for that matter? I'm sick of being unloved. And you just led me on. So, thanks a lot. I was almost happy for a second there." I rolled my eyes and walked away.
"Soph, what are you talking about?" Jason grabbed my arm. I turned around. I couldn't help but admire his abs.
"Taylor told me, Jason. I'm not your first. But nice try. You actually made me feel special. For about a day, at least. That one deserves a round of applause." I shook his hand off of my arm. He looked confused. "Don't look like you have no clue what I'm talking about. Because we both know that you know exactly what I'm talking about."
"You believed Taylor!? Sophie, you are special. In every way. Believe me."
"Save it." I started walking away.
"Sophie, please."
"Look. I want to believe you. I don't want to suffer from a broken heart, Jason. Not again." Tears were streaming down my face. "I'm sorry."
I recognized the pain in his eyes. It was the same pain my dad had in his eyes when my mom left him.
"Sophie." He choked out. The coach called him back, but he stayed where he was. Tears ran down his face. I've never made a guy cry before.
"They're calling you, Jason. You better go."
"No, Sophie. It doesn't matter. You're more important to me than this game."
"I'll get over it. Just go. I'll talk to you again some time."
"Promise?" The tears stopped falling.
"I promise."
