We were getting up to leave the hospital at around 5:00, and his grandma stopped us.
"I wanted to tell you that you're very beautiful." She said, smiling at me. "You remind me of Michelle."
"Grandma." Jason said cautiously.
"I'm sorry." She said and hid her face. Jason pulled me out of the room before I could ask about it.
"Who's Michelle?"
"It doesn't matter." He said and pulled me by my arm out to the car.
"I want to know." I demanded.
"Sophie, it doesn't matter."
"I don't care. Just tell me."
"No. You'll get upset."
"I promise I won't." I told him. "I promise." I repeated.
"Fine." He said after we got in the car and buckled our seatbelts. "I was in love with her." He explained.
"That's it?"
"No, that's not it. But I don't want to tell you the rest. It's stupid. I was stupid."
"Jason, just tell me."
"I proposed to her. But we never got married. It was a stupid thing to do. We were young. We didn't know what we were doing. And she left. I never heard from her again."
"You were engaged!? Why didn't you tell me!?"
"Because, talking about her hurts."
"Huh. Well that's great to know." I said and slammed the door shut when I got out of the car.
"Sophie, what's wrong?"
"Nothing." I walked up to the door of my house.
"Tell me!" He said and grabbed my arm.
"I can't ever be anyone's first. Ever! It's not fair. Now, I have a broken heart again."
"Sophie, do you think you're the only one in this world that's ever had a broken heart?"
"No, I-"
"You're not the only one! It broke my heart that she left me. I was in love with her. I wanted to spend my whole life with her. She left me." He raised his voice. "My heart was broken. It seems like you think you're the only one that's ever had a broken heart or something. But my heart isn't broken anymore. It's slowly coming back together because I met you." He started crying. "I'm sorry, Sophie."
"I'm sorry, too. I didn't mean what I said. I know I'm not the only one with a broken heart. I just feel like everything I do has to be hard. None of it's ever been easy since my mom left us. It's never been the same. It's never been easy. I'm afraid of my dad. I can't talk to him without him punching me. It's never been easy. I just-" He leaned in to kiss me. I smiled when he pulled away.
"You won't ever have a broken heart again."
"How can you be so sure?" I asked, looking up at him.
"I just know. Wait here. I'll be right back." He ran to get something in his car and came back with his hands behind his back. He stood in front of me, smiling.
"What?" I started laughing.
"Sophia Leigh Rosewood," He pulled his arms in front of him and was holding roses and a white teddy bear with hearts all over it. "Will you be my girlfriend?" He handed me the roses and I took them in my hands. I smiled at him.
"Yes, Jason. I'd love to be your girlfriend."
