Chapter six: Lonely Roads.

When you hang around people long enough, you grew rather fond of that person. You grew to like them in ways you could never imagine. Now that we were trapped in this world, I never thought I would find love after Zack. Heck, I didn't think I would lose everybody that I loved in the blink of an eye. But it happened and we couldn't do a thing to stop it.

Daryl was a little older than me. Okay, he was much older than me but that didn't matter. I was attracted to someone who looked out for me and who was willing to take care of me, especially when the world had ended and Daryl had ticked all of the boxes. He might not show how much he cared but I knew he did.

And the thought of that made me smile.

Our shoulders brushed against each others as we continued to walk and we found the other end of the forest. "The coast is clear." Daryl said as we stepped out of the forest and onto the road again. "And it looks like we found a convenience store."

I sighed with relief as we hurried across the road to the store. The doors were already open and Daryl went in as I trailed behind him and held my knife up in front of me. The store was abandoned but luckily we could take the last bit of supplies to keep us alive for a few more days.

I took a bottle of water from the broken fridge and took a huge gulp and handed it to Daryl. He drunk half the bottle as I began to collect the rest of the bottles that filled the fridge. I took a few cans and packets of food that would last us at least a week.

Daryl started munching on a packet of chips as I found an energy bar to chew on. Daryl got a few bags and stuffed everything he could find in them and I did the same. "We should go before anything else passes through." Daryl said, retrieving a map of the state from the counter. With our supplies, we left the store and continued on with what was left of the road. And here we are, again. Travelling on an unknown road and we didn't know what was coming next.

And that scared me a little.

"Where are we headed?" I asked as we leaned against an old abandoned car with the map laid out in front of us.

Daryl studied the map before he replied. "We need a place to stay for the long run." I sighed, I guess that didn't include finding Maggie. She got out, she had to be alive with the others. I had to thank Tara for that information.

"I know you want to find your sister." Daryl said softly, making me tingle inside. "But we have to survive first."

"That's all we ever do." I whispered, looking at the map instead of him. His eyes burned into me and I could feel him look at me as I looked down.

"You gotta realise that Maggie might not be alive anymore. You need to be ready for that." He said as I looked up with tears in my eyes.

"I know, I'm being stupid having hope like this." I cried.

"No, you're not stupid, Beth. Sometimes it's good to have hope even when there is little left." He said. Why was he being so nice? Well, I liked the nice in him. Beth, stop. He's too old for you and you can't be together. Maybe the little voice in my head was right. Ugh, I hated that voice. "We should head north," he cleared his throat, "there's a little town over there and maybe some motels."

I faintly smiled and wiped away the remaining tears. "Okay, let's go."

He packed away the map and we continued to walk this lonely road. "Walker." Daryl said softly while getting his crossbow ready and aiming it at the thing that trailed towards us.

And bam, the walker was dead.

We moved around it and continued to walk straight ahead to a small town that I never knew of. I didn't think I had been around here before and I had been everywhere but not here. A sign appeared in our sight, indicating that the town we were hoping for was up ahead.

Thank God, I was tired of walking.

We entered the small little town and it was obviously deserted. Leaves were scattered everywhere and the buildings were rusted but not enough to bring it down and no walkers. Well, not yet anyway.

"A motel," Daryl smiled, "come on, we better get in before it gets dark." I followed him into the reception area with no sign of anything. We trailed up the stairs of this creaky building with our weapons out and ready to take down anything that got in our way. But nothing. People must have left before things got worse.

We opened the door to a room with only a double bed and I was assuming we had to stay together. Just in case. And I liked the sound of that.

This room was small but one thing that caught my eyes was the piano that was standing next to the window that outlooked the town. My smile had never been bigger and Daryl noticed it too.

"We might have to share the same bed," Daryl grunted, "it doesn't look like there are single beds in here."

"Fine by me." I blushed, hoping he didn't notice but I think he did.

"We should sleep." He said, putting our supplies and crossbow down onto the ground and crashed on the bed.

I did the same and gently lied on the bed and closed my eyes. But my thoughts were still running wild as I was sleeping. I never thought this bed would be as comfortable as it was and I never thought that I would be sleeping next to Daryl Dixon.

Yeah, this was better.
